MONDAY, OCT. 17 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

Rhythm & Rye + Spar Café = cheers to the past

The Valley + 7 Seas Brewing = trivia slings and Arrows

OBRADOR

Performing from 1976-2006, Obrador released four CDs and performed as a seven-piece ensemble that grew to an 8-, 9- and 10-piece band. The band was a who’s who of local musical talent: Michael Moore, Michael Olson, Paul Hjelm, Tom Russell, Steve Luceno, Steven Bentley, Connie Bunyer and Jim Pribbenow. The jazz group was known for its funky, earthy blending of traditions. Coming together for the first time in 10 years and sponsored by Olympia Jazz Central, the group will perform in an 8 p.m. show at Rhythm & Rye.

PREFUNK: McMenamins’ Black Widow Porter turns 25 this month, and McMenamins’ Spar Café in downtown Olympia is pouring it through Halloween. Duncan Saffir first brewed the beer in 1991; a year after McMenamins’ Thompson Brewery & Public House became the first brewery in Salem, Oregon, since post-Prohibition. Today, Black Widow Porter is brewed with dry licorice root and woodruff, a plant used in absinthe.

POST-PUNK INOCULATORS

With driving bass lines and celestial melodies, Arrows combine the post-punk aesthetic a la Joy Division, the Cure, and Interpol with lonesome beach symbolism, creating a sound that clearly represents a gray day in our city by the sea. The Santa Cruz band will join local surf punkers The Pecos and mellow indie band Cape Nowhere at 9 p.m. in The Valley.

PREFUNK: Most weeknights, you can find pub trivia events in every quadrant of South Sound, each with their own spin on testing your knowledge. Many have rabid fanbases, weekly teams of smarty-pants players who apparently didn’t get their fill of tests in school. Every Monday at 6 p.m. in Gig Harbor, 7 Seas Brewing allows them to show their taproom how much random, useless knowledge they possess. The vibe in the taproom is always so laid back, even during trivia it’s easy to forget you’re there to win, especially as you sip the brewery’s Hop Prophet Wet Hop Ale, Baltic Porter or Autumn Ale.
