MONDAY, JUNE 20 16: South Sound events + craft beer …

Literary night + Parkway Randall = oh the stories that will be told!
The Lobster + Barefoot Wit Belgian White Ale = award winners

CREATIVE COLLOQUY

There’s no doubt that it’s become more convenient to talk at people via social media platforms than to share a face-to-face dialogue, so it’s refreshing that someone like Jackie Casella is keeping the art of critical discourse alive. For those who enjoy a night at the bar but don’t do well with crowds, or would rather meet new people by engaging in thoughtful discussion rather than shouting over music, Creative Colloquy provides a space to do so. The group’s third Monday literary night has been going on for several years, and are always full of lively, thought-provoking stories and poetry. Here’s how it will go down at 7 p.m. inside B Sharp Coffee House: Nick Stillman, Chanin Kaye, Kristen Orlando, Marck Wilder and Cordell Corbin will read their short stories, prose or poetry, then the floor will open for listeners to do the same.

PREFUNK: Every Monday at 4:50 p.m. they hover around the left side of the Parkway Tavern’s bar. Sometimes three people deep. They watch Parkway manager Sean Jackson fill and tinker, tinker and fill, sometimes ignoring the one-liners thrown at him, but you can see his smile. These craft beers drinkers represent the more anxious ones who make the Tacoma North Slope Historic District watering hole their home every Monday night. Most sit back and what to hear what ingredients have been added to the night’s Randall craft beer. Randall? Though it’s technically named an organoleptic hop transducer module, the Randall is a surprisingly not-so-technical piece of hardware used to infuse beer. Here’s how it works: The system moves draft beer through an infusion chamber connected to a keg. From there, the alcohol from the beer strips the flavors of the ingredients in the chamber, which acts as an extension of the keg system. The beer then pours from the tap, taking the new flavors with it. Add the Parkway staff’s knowledge and craziness, and you’ve got yourself an adventurous play on craft beer. Bonus: the Parkway offers a Randall punch card with a commemorative shirt and glass as rewards.

THE LOBSTER

How we yearn for the innocent days of Logan’s Run, when you could be anything you wanted as long as you were willing to be killed at age 30. In the Cannes Film festival award-winning film The Lobster, life is considerably more constrained: a totalitarian society where single people are rounded up and sent to “The Hotel.” If they fail to find a partner within 45 days, they are transformed into the animal of their choice and set loose into the nearby woods. David (Colin Farrell) chooses the lobster, for its long lifespan and rigorous fertility. Catch the film at 1:15, 3:50, 6:30 and 9:05 p.m. at The Grand Cinema.

PREFUNK: The RAM Restaurant & Brewery is gearing up for summer with their 2016 North American Beer Awards Gold Medal winner, Barefoot Wit Belgian White Ale. Available at all RAM locations, the beer is a favorite of RAM Director of Brewing Dave Leonard. “Our brewers have crafted the ideal Wit; hazy white hued with fruity orange notes, coriander spice and Belgian yeast character a light refreshing finish. I had high hopes when I sampled this batch as it was bottled and sent to the NABA competition, the balance of flavors seems perfect. Perfect enough to earn a gold medal.”
