MONDAY, SEPT. 12 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Valley + 7 Seas Brewing = Baltic Porter meets Andy Kaufman meets Black Sabbath

The Swiss + Parkway Tavern = tales and infused ales

DEATH VALLEY GIRLS

Want to see a bluesy rock & roll band that believes in a world of ghosts, mummies, UFOs, conspiracy theories, aliens and demons? LA’s Death Valley Girls will unleash a wild energy that will almost suck the whole Valley Pub into their bass drum. The keyboardist will point a raygun at you. The Kid disappears in a swell of hair behind the drum kit. Pickle melts into her bass, which she calls “the boning instrument.” This is Andy Kaufman meets Black Sabbath, beginning at 8 p.m. The Golden Idols and Coke & Snickers open.

PREFUNK: The Baltic Porter is a strong porter with assertive chocolate malt, robust sweetness, some hints of toffee and roastedness. This beer is substantially alcoholic, ranging from 6% to 9.5%. The style evolved in the 18th and 19th centuries from the British porter, but was strongly influenced by the robust Russian imperial stout. The Baltic porter reflects the strong beers designed to withstand being shipped across the North Sea to the lands of the Baltic Sea. While the porter style is an ale, the Baltic variant is brewed using lager yeast and fermented at colder temperatures. 7 Seas Brewing has released its Baltic Porter, gently hopped with US Goldings contributing to a long, balanced finish. Have one from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in its Gig Harbor taproom or 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. in its Tacoma taproom.

OPEN MIC

Aspiring acoustic performers, poets, and storytellers: unite, and take over the 7 pm open mic night at The Swiss Restaurant and Pub. Everyone from open-mike virgins to established artists testing out new material can be found at this popular downtown Tacoma bar.

PREFUNK: Every Monday, the Parkway Tavern pushes craft beers to the boundaries of flavor. Around 5 p.m. a crowd gathers around manager Sean Jackson at the end of the bar trying to break his concentration as he fills the Randall with hops or fruit or even candy. “Hey Sean…What’s tonight’s concoction?” someone will ask Jackson as he hones the goodness. “Hey Sean…Want to see my kid’s drawing of Iggy Pop with a Kim Kardashian ass?” another will ask. “Hey Sean… You’re like the love child of Rachael Ray and Garrett Oliver playing that old Operation game,” quips another. Jackson eventually connects all the lines and loads the tube with infusing spices, fruit or other seasonings to cheers. Be sure to grab a Parkway Randall punch card. Fill that sucker out and you’ll score a commemorative shirt and glass.
