DJ OMARVELOUS

Inspired by the lack of variety in dance music in Tacoma, Calvin Murphy and Omar Stokes founded Ocean Grooves Entertainment in January 1999. They started off strong that February with Monday night shows at the 6th & Proctor Bar & Grill (later became Hell’s Kitchen) and dedicated it to underground dance music showcasing various DJs from Seattle plus Tacoma favorites such as Donald Glaude and DJ dAb. Seventeen years later, Murphy and Omarvelous are still throwing DJ parties, including at 9 p.m. dance party with DJ Omavelous himself at The Swiss.
PREFUNK: The commercial production of gruit dates back to the 15th century in Europe, if not earlier. Such early ales predate the use hops, and instead were made with various herbs and spices, often proprietary to a given beer maker. Among the spices most often identified were sweet gale (bog myrtle), yarrow, wild/marsh rosemary, ginger, juniper, cinnamon, sage and heather. It’s difficult to find detailed gruit recipes. Exactly what spices were used and in what quantities was a closely guarded secret, especially by early monastery breweries, where gruits became known for magical and mystical qualities. Jesse Dunagan of downtown Tacoma’s Dunagan Brewing Co. brewed an ancient herbed ale with exotic ingredients from neighboring Mad Hat Tea Company. The result is a refreshing Capetown RedBush Heather Gruit.

DANCE!! ATTACK!!

“Dance!! Attack!!” returns with crates of vinyl in homage to the boogie at 9 p.m. in Obsidian in downtown Olympia. The night will be about health, positivity, vibrancy, love for dancing and the warm, complete sound and energy of a diverse disco culture. Olympians know Long Hair David and his tireless spirit, his advocacy for the unseen population of Olympia, and his love for sweaty dancing. All proceeds from the door go to benefit David’s medical costs. He has been fighting for Olympia for a long time and now it is time to warrior up. Dance Warriors! Keepers of the Floor! Obsidian summons you with undying love! DANCE!! ATTACK!!
PREFUNK: Every Friday at 5 p.m. Boston Harbor Marina in Olympia hosts a barbecue paired with live music and local craft beer. Tonight, Dick’s Brewing Company and its Dick’s Danger Ale is on the dock with singer/songwriter Deb Dodge serenading your feast of enchiladas, refried beans, Spanish rice, homemade guacamole and salsa.
