FRIDAY, AUG. 19 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Swiss + Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. = music and beers

Harlequin Productions + Boston Harbor Marina = meeting in center ring

VICCI MARTINEZ

Tacoma’s own, Vicci Martinez is a singer-songwriter who continually goes against the grain both musically and lyrically. She doesn’t adhere to guidelines of what pop music is supposed to be or how it should be presented. Given her penchant for writing honest, heartfelt songs, she doesn’t have to either. When she hits The Swiss Restaurant and Pub stage at 9 p.m. she’ll nod to soulful folk and classic rock with an immortal R&B groove beneath everything.

PREFUNK: The music typically coming out of Denmark leans toward art punk, power electronics and cold synth pop. Jessica Lynne, who grew up 60 km south of Copenhagen, sings country music. Country Music Television had an effect on her life, as did rural life, with cows outside the church windows. Have a pint of Montamara Summer Ale and catch her free, all-ages show at 7 p.m. in Pacific Brewing & Malting Co.’s taproom.

THE LAST FIVE YEARS

Harlequin Productions stages an unprecedented third musical this season, The Last Five Years, which tells the story of the rise and fall of a five-year relationship between Jamie and Cathy, played by musical theater veterans Aaron Lamb and Katherine Strohmaier. The two take turns singing songs, telling the story from their point of view. However, Jamie begins his story at the beginning of the relationship and each song moves him forward in time, while Cathy begins at the end of the relationship and each song moves her backward in time. The Last Five Years hits the Harlequin stage at 8 p.m.

PREFUNK: Deschutes Brewery has released a new seasonal, Sagefight Imperial IPA. In one corner are lively botanicals hailing from the high dessert; in the other corner are heavyweight Millennium, Bravo, Amarillo and Centennial hops. Citrusy hops go head to head with resinous sage and juniper in a flavor battle royal at Boston Harbor Marina from 5-8 p.m. That’s right. Boston Harbor Marina’s Friday barbecue features beers from Deschutes Brewery, as well as Hawaiian chicken sandwich, Hawaiian slaw, chips and Haupa bars. Edge Water Trio provides the soundtrack.
