FRIDAY, MARCH 10 2017: South Sound events paired with craft beer …

Jazzbones + Peaks and Pints = Fist-pumping bluegrass and craft beer

Immanuel Presbyterian Church + Powerhouse Restaurant and Brewery = Band of Lovers trio and Slamarillo

THE RUSTY CLEAVERS

Armed with husky harmonies, bluegrass instruments and a heaping dose of one-liners, moonshinegrass band The Rusty Cleavers rattled the empties at MountainHouse Productions in August 2016, laying down tracks for their upcoming album. Peaks and Pints had the honor of witnessing the studio session, as we paired fist-pumping bluegrass with apple moonshine and the magnificent Mikkeller Koppi Coffee IPA Citra & Wachuri. Good times. The Tacoma-based Cleavers will officially release the album at 8 p.m. in Jazzbones. The Shivering Denizens and Bolo will open.

PREFUNK: The Russian Imperial Stout originates from England as an export to the Baltic states and Russia. It takes its name from its popularity with the Russian Imperial Court. This beer offers a rich maltiness that can be intense, with varying amounts of roastedness. It is also characterized by a lingering roasted malt finish that is warm with port-like qualities. Two of the best representations are waiting for you at Peaks and Pints. Pouring from our Western red cedar tap log is Anderson Valley’s Huge Arker Russian Imperial Stout (13.8%) with luxurious flavors of honey and molasses intertwined with the richness of dark chocolate and the ardent warmth of alcohol, underpinned with hints of coffee, vanilla and dark fruits from being aged in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels. Two Beers Brewing Company re-released its award-winning Fall Line Russian Imperial Stout (12%). The Seattle brewery barrel ages this Alta Series stout in brandy barrels for six months, emerging with a deep, multilayered beer with a thick, smooth body that carries immense, complex flavors of coffee, plums, chocolate, vanilla and highland peat under a deep milk-chocolate creamy head.

AMERICAN TOUR HITS TACOMA

Friends for 10 years, upstate New Yorkers Sabina Beachdell (singer and ukulele) and Dave Strumfeld (singer and guitarist) united their troubadour talents in 2013 to craft a five-song eponymous EP under the band name, Band of Lovers. Drummer Liliana Urbain joined the folk-pop group and the trio hit the road for three years, with a short stay in Gig Harbor in early 2015. Band of Lovers are back in Pierce County tonight, hosting an official CD release party for The Coast — a full-length, crowdfunded album they recorded in a cabin in Woodstock and celebrating their so-to-be-released sophomore album, American Tour — at 7 p.m. in Tacoma’s Immanuel Presbyterian Church, where they performed in 2015.

PREFUNK: The haze craze has hit downtown Puyallup. Powerhouse Restaurant and Brewery has released its cloudy IPA, Slamarillo Pale Ale. Can you guess what hop makes this session IPA all orange-y, lemon-y and apricot-y? Amarillo, indeed. Amarillo provides a super-citrusy aroma verging on oranges, lively fruit flavor and a medium-high bitterness, that is sure to wake the taste buds — thus the name, Slamarillo.
