Oktoberfest with Sierra Nevada Brewing

The party began in October 1810, when a great horse race was organized to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Everyone had so much fun that it was held again, and eventually became an annual event, dubbed “Oktoberfest” in 1872. It has since evolved into a 16-day Munich blowout in late September and early October. Oh, to be in that great mass of humanity, dancing to the throbbing polka beats, scarfing down sausage, kraut, and strudel, and most of all, imbibing from the holy grail … er, stein. …
Fortunately, that’s no reason for a South Sounder to cry in his or her beer. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company will host an Oktoberfest celebration at Peaks and Pints in Tacoma’s Proctor neighborhood Thursday, Sept. 29. The Chico, California brewery will pour the 2016 Oktoberfest, Harvest Northern Hemisphere, Hop Hunter, Narwhal, Pale Ale and Otra Vez. In addition, Sierra Nevada will host a Stein Hoisting Competition with the winner taking home two campfire chairs.
Each year, Sierra Nevada partners with a different German brewer to explore a different approach to the Oktoberfest beer style. In 2016, Sierra Nevada worked with Bamberg, Germany’s Mahrs Bräu on a new version of the classic style. This authentic version of the festival beer is deep golden in color with a rich malt complexity, but with a noticeable spicy hop character from the use of the nearly forgotten Record hop varietal.
Also expect swag, German food and just enough accordion music before you go mad.
After enjoying a few pints you’ll be doing the chicken dance with gusto, or very possibly with someone named Gustav.
