Tailored suits, well-fitting jeans, lots of knitted sweaters, denim on denim, all-black looks, slick back hair, and a red lip doesn’t describe DJ ABV, but rather singer Sade Adu who DJ ABV, aka Nick Weitzel, will be spinning in support of Adu’s 65th birthday and a Western red cedar tap log takeover of Black Raven Brewing beers Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Peaks & Pints in Tacoma’s Proctor District.
It makes perfect sense that these kindred spirits are associated with a night of smoke-softened seduction and a Russian Imperial Stout with rich dark caramel notes, unsweetened chocolate, and hints of coffee aromas and flavors. DJ ABV is, at times, moody, evocative, sensual, and mysterious — spinning with his left hand while tipping a Black Raven Splinters Scotch Ale with peated malts and gentle boozy notes with his right. Ever since Sade first appeared in the mid-1980s, the singer and her band have perfected their own brand of sensual slow jam — equal parts luscious and languorous. With the gentlest of arrangements and Adu’s silken voice, Sade’s best songs glimmer with the warmth of the afterglow, like the last moments between the passionfruit, peach, grapefruit and pineapple flavors of Black Raven’s West Coat IPA and sleep.
Experience the gently rhythmic rocking of Sade, the master of planning a musical journey DJ ABV, and six Black Raven beers on tap Tuesday at Peaks & Pints.
