WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 28 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

LIFE DRAWING WITH SUPERSTARS

King’s Books hosts the fez wearing, secret handshaking and world domination task force known as The Cartoonists League of Absurd Washingtonians, or C.L.A.W., and its life drawing session with local cosplay superstars Tina Rivets, Blade Gannon, Abie Ekenezar and Tiffany Frazier from 7:30-9 p.m. Fee and open to the public, the superstars will strike a pose for you to sketch to your heart’s desire.

PREFUNK: The Red Hot will offer a “shitload of fresh hop kegs” when the Sixth Avenue craft beer and eatery opens at 11 a.m., including all four versions of Fremont Brewing’s Farm-To-Ferment Fresh Hop Series, and both versions of their Cowiche Canyon.

COMEDY OPEN MIC

Standup comedy hasn’t evolved much since the glory days of ventriloquist and puppet. Every so often, there’s a Gallagher smashing watermelons or a musical funnyman like Jack Black, but for the most part, comedy is a dude on a stage with a microphone, plodding through a joke-punchline-new-joke routine. You’re funny. You need to change the course of comedy forever. At 8 p.m. the Tacoma Comedy Club opens its stage to the public for a comedy open mic.

PREFUNK: South Hill Puyallup craft beer haven Rainier Growlers also hosts a fresh hop celebration with fresh hop brews from Two Beers, Fremont, Bainbridge Island, Dick’s, Georgetown, Hop Valley, 10 Barrel, Double Mountain and others from 6-9 p.m.

JAZZ GUITAR

Vince Brown is no stranger to string swing fans in the Northwest. He plays western swing style take-off guitar with Red Brown & the Tune Stranglers; strums guitar and tenor banjo with the gypsy swing band Hot Club Sandwich; he’s half of Red and Ruby — a swing duo project with vocalist LaVon Hardison; performs mandolin and tenor banjoist with the old timey outfit Deaf Lester; and the guitarist with the modern jazz/lounge group The Greta Jane Quartet. Brown’s nimble fingers have delighted audiences for more than 37 years. Catch his solo jazz guitarist downstairs at Swing Wing Bar & Cafe, the converted bungalow overlooking Capitol Lake in Olympia, at 6 p.m.

PREFUNK: Two decades of innovative craft brewing is a big deal. Only a small percentage of craft beer companies can boast such tenure. The significance of this milestone is not lost on Stone Brewing Co.’s co-founders, Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, who have spent more than a full year celebrating the big 2-0 in grand style. Northwest Beerwerks taproom and bottle shop celebrates Stone’s 20th from 6-10 p.m. with a bunch of Stone Imperial IPAs and special beers, as well as Delicious IPA and Wussie Pilsner.

NPCC OPEN MIC

Unlike certain franchise joints that dot our landscape with little green faces like Martian pimples, Northern Pacific Coffee Company’s aspiration is not java hegemony. No, Northern Pacific is content with its corner on Garfield, a block east of Pacific Lutheran University, and its reputation as a great place to procrastinate. Sandwiches and coffee, cornerstones of all serious collegiate malingering, are here in force, but the real treat is the book-lined walls, craft beer and Wednesday night open mic. Grab a beer, select a sci-fi romance and enjoy the local musical talent at 7 p.m.

PREFUNK: Those with some upper-body strength can partake in brew-purveyor Samuel Adams’ national stein hoisting competition beginning at 6 p.m. in The Eleven Eleven on Hilltop Tacoma. Hold that heavy beer as long as you can and perhaps be one of the lucky SOBs who nets a trip to Munich’s Oktoberfest in 2017.

BONUS: Americans love other countries’ holidays — especially when they involve adult beverages. So it’s no wonder that many Tacomans looks forward to The Harmon Restaurant’s annual weeklong Oktoberfest celebration. At 7 p.m., the downtown restaurant hosts an Oktoberfest Trivia night with a bunch of bratwurst on the menu.
