MONDAY PREFUNK: Craft beer before Jenn Champion, Beatles movie

Share

MONDAY, SEPT. 26 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

Real Art + Harmon Brewery = Champion Oktoberfest

The Grand Cinema + Local Boys Tap Room = 8 Days and 8 Hours

JENN CHAMPION

Jenn Champion, a founding member of Northwest indie rock band Carissa’s Weird, will headline a show with Sun Riah and Lobsana at the Real Art club on South Tacoma Way. Champion just released her new EP, No One, that features six remixes of “No One” from leading Northwest producers, artists and DJs. She has gone through a number of names for her musical output over the course of her 15 year career; most recently, the Seattle songwriter and her band released music under the moniker ‘S’. The doors open at 7 p.m.

PREFUNK: Sure, the main party is this Thursday, but Oktoberfest is hardly a one-off at Harmon Brewing Co.’s flagship restaurant and bar in downtown Tacoma. The Harmon restaurant will pepper you all week with a series of Oktoberfest events, with its 19th Annual Oktoberfest Brewmasters Dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29. Today, Harmon releases its Fall Ball Imperial Harvest Red and Extra Innings IRA, offers a $3 steak frites and hosts live music at its downtown restaurant from 7-9 p.m.

THE BEATLES

Is there anything left to say about The Beatles after Peaks and Pints’ The Beatles Revolver In Beer this past August? And yet, the word is Ron Howard’s new documentary The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — The Touring Years proves surprisingly revelatory and engaging. Howard compiles an impressive array of footage depicting the Fab Four over the mere three years the band toured. All the archival footage is supplemented by explanatory interviews, some of them archival and others, including from Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, contemporary. Catch the film at 7 and 8:30 p.m. in The Grand Cinema.

PREFUNK: A couple of Caffe Ladro coffee employees from Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill decided, probably over their homebrews rather than coffee, to start a new brewery in South Seattle. In February 2015, Jeff Howell and Frank Lawrence launched Counterbalance Brewing Company capitalizing on each other’s homebrewing talents. More experienced homebrewer Lawrence grabbed the head brewer title while Howell would be the frontman. The Local Boys Tap Room next to the Purdy Bridge in Gig Harbor will host Counterbalance for one of its marathon brewer’s day sessions from noon to 10 p.m. Drop by for a Counterbalance Kushetka Imperial Stout, a couple IPAs, a Belgian strong and a delicious Oktoberfest and chat with the brewers.
