TACOMA PREFUNK WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 27 2017: Skookum Radagast Brown and Dunkirk

PREFUNK: The brown ale has origins in 17th century England, where it was a name given to a dark-colored, mild ale. Skookum Brewery’s Radagast Brown is considered an English brown ale, which means more emphasis to the malt, while American versions have a bit more hoppy aroma and flavor. The Arlington brewery follows the style suit with a plethora of English specialty malts and hopped with Nugget. Peaks and Pints has the Radagast pouring from our Western red cedar tap log today. Expect notes of toffee, caramel, toasted bread and milk chocolate. Dare we say a “crushable” brown ale?

6-9 P.M. HALF LION BREWERS NIGHT: Jason Nelson, David Westby and Adam Shay opens Half Lion Brewing Co. in early 2016 brewing Logshow Blonde, Lloyd Pale Ale, Target Tree IPA, Albert’s Amber and Lahar Stout on a 10-barrel system. Tonight, Half Lion showcases its beers at Stonegate Restaurant and Bar in South Tacoma.

7 P.M. DUNKIRK: Dunkirk is the story of the evacuation of more than 300,000 Allied troops (mostly British and French) from the beaches of Dunkirk, France, in the spring of 1940, following the Germans’ victories in the Battle of France. The events have been depicted on film before, perhaps most notably in the identically titled Dunkirk (1958) starring John Mills and Richard Attenborough, but it was vastly different from this version, with the military aspect only part of its story. It also cannot compare visually or emotionally to the new version. The Blue Mouse Theatre screens the film that Entertainment Weekly calls a “visceral, big-budget filmmaking that can be called Art. It’s also, hands down, the best motion picture of the year so far.”
