Late-summer rhythms continue to thrum through Washington’s wild places—daylight lingers, wildflowers nod in alpine breeze, and trail dust rises with every sunrise. This week brought summit glory, cheeky wildlife encounters, and a wildfire reminder in Olympic’s backcountry. Here’s what dispatches from the field—and fire lines—revealed.

⛰ WTA Trip Report Highlights

  • Wing Lake → Black Peak → Heather–Maple Pass Loop (Overnight, Aug. 18) — Nights at Wing Lake, summit push to Black Peak, and flawless alpine views. The trails are snow-free, and the skies are clear.
  • Heather Lake (Mountain Loop Hwy) (Day hike, Aug. 18) — Smooth, bug-free, snow-free trail with an outhouse-cleaning tale for the ages.
  • Naches Peak Loop & Dewey Lake (Day hike, Aug. 18) — Meadows in bloom, trail well maintained. Bugs present near Dewey Lake but views compensated.
  • Mount Catherine & Lakes Loop (Day hike, Aug. 18) — Fall colors arriving, rough road requires high clearance, but solitude and vistas rewarded early risers.

  • Olympic National Park & Forest — Campfire ban still in place (no ash-producing devices). Propane/gas stoves only.

  • Washington State Parks remain under Level 3 burn bans (propane/gas only).
