RACHEL PLATTEN

Growing up in Boston, Rachel Platten recalls harmonizing with her family to finely crafted pop songs — from Sam Cooke to The Beatles — that dominated her parents’ vinyl collection. As a teenager, she gravitated toward, and began to become affected by, hip-hop and female singer-songwriters — Tori Amos, Patti Griffin, A Tribe Called Quest and Nas. The commonality between the two seemingly different genres: confessional and vulnerable songwriting. Platten finally hit it big with “Fight Song,” the spirited indie-pop anthem she wrote to convince herself not to quit an industry that had been rejecting her for over a decade. Platten joins X Ambassadors for a 7:30 p.m. performs at the Washington State Fair.

PREFUNK: In July, Mike Besser, also known as BrewDad, purchased NW Caps N Taps bottle shop and taproom in Bonney Lake transforming the popular craft beer joint along Highway 410 into BrewDad’s of Bonney Lake, with Besser at the helm filling growlers, popping bottle caps and serving hot dogs. Before Besser became Bonney Lake’s BrewDad he was the right-hand man for Casey Sobol and Jason Stoltz, owners of Top Rung Brewing Co. in Lacey. From 6-9 p.m. Besser welcomes his former employer to his joint, pouring Top Rung’s Lacey Dark Lager, an IPA and Trashed Pumpkin Ale, and sharing stories of all the practical jokes he pulled on Sobol and Stoltz.

NEW WORKS BY MARIA JOST AND ZACHARY MARVICK

Maria Jost, among many other traits, is known around Tacoma for being wicked smart, fun, adventurous and her “illustrations inspired by the beauty of the surrounding environment, the diverse adaptations of the species of the world, the biological sciences, and the elegant patterns and processes of nature.” Oh, and remember her collage-drawings paying homage to the natural ingredients featured in bartender Chris Keil’s distinctive cocktails? So beautiful. So cool. Jost has a new art show with Zachary Marvick at Brooks Dental Studio. An opening reception for New Works begins at 5 p.m.

PREFUNK: What woman doesn’t fantasize about relaxing under a palm tree on a sandy beach, being tended to by sexy waiters bearing delicious craft beer? Well, we can’t promise the sand, the tree or the sexy waiters, but ladies can live out the rest of their fantasies at Odd Otter Brewing Company’s Ladies Night, from 2 p.m. to close. Yea, that sounds more like Ladies Day. Anyhoo, the downtown Tacoma brewery will knock 15% off all beers for the ladies, as well as re-release The Darkside of the Otter and Screeching Otter Double IPA.
