TACOMA PREFUNK SATURDAY, AUG. 25 2017: Founders Green Zebra Gose and a screenwriting panel

PREFUNK: Founders Brewing Co.’s award-winning stouts and IPAs watched in horror as the Grand Rapids, Michigan brewery brewed a watermelon gose. (Insert record scratch.) It took a year’s worth of test batches, but Founders Green Zebra is a thing — a tasty thing. There’s sweet, juicy watermelon flavor up front — real watermelon, not Jolly Rancher watermelon — and a tart, slightly salty finish. At 4.6% ABV and 10 IBUs, this crisp, easy drinking beer for late summer pours from Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log.

NOON TO CLOSE: PARKWAY TAVERN IPA FESTIVAL: How much does Sean “Hop Flower” Jackson loves India Pale Ales? Check his odometer. It’s been spinning the last couple of weeks and he has the brewery stickers to prove it. Jackson taps 30 IPAs today at his beloved Parkway Tavern, including many hard-to-find ditties, recent collaborations and the top three winners of the Parkway ’s blind IPA contest for Tacoma Beer Week: Tacoma Brewing Co., Dystopian State Brewing Co. and Engine House No. 9. Add a beer garden, live music and everyone you know and it’s a grand day.

2 P.M.: DESTINY CITY FILM FESTIVAL SCREENWRITING PANEL: As part of the Destiny City Film Festival all weekend at the Blue Mouse Theatre, Peaks and Pints hosts a Screenwriting Panel moderated by Daryle Conners, an award-winning writer, filmmaker and video game designer whose short film, J’arrive, shot in Paris, premiered at SIFF in 2015. Conners will toss questions at Betty Kim, Kevin Rexroat, Kristi Simkins and Persephone Vandegrift — all accomplished screenwriters. Expect to hear the struggles, successes and failures encountered while pursuing a career as a screenwriter.

2-9 P.M. FRUIT BEER FESTIVAL: Tacoma Brewing Co. will pour a bunch of its own fruit beers, as well as others by the downtown Tacoma brewery’s Fruithead friends.

11 A.M. TO 7 P.M. HILLTOP STREET FAIR: There are a string of good reasons to lay your head in Tacoma. It’s friendly. It’s unpretentious. It’s affordable. It’s full of great neighborhoods. It’s full of great people. It’s surprisingly hip in its own odd way. Tacoma shines today at the Hilltop Street Fair. Come see the best of Hilltop with multiple music stages, the Hilltop fashion show, Hilltop Film Competition, street dancing, free health and wellness checks, car show, food trucks and much more. Stretching over three city blocks, this summer’s Hilltop Street Fair is Tacoma.
