Shaping the Story: Designs for the Theatre by Carey Wong | Washington State History Museum | 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

All October long, we at Peaks & Pints are pairing Tacoma Arts Month happenings with beers from our 13-door cooler — because art deserves a pint after the applause, and beer tastes better when it carries a story from the stage, the gallery, or the street.

Step behind the curtain at the Washington State History Museum for Shaping the Story: Designs for the Theatre by Carey Wong, a sweeping exhibition that transforms sketches, scale models, and costumes into a visual symphony of storytelling. Carey Wong’s work spans more than fifty years and over three hundred productions — operas, plays, musicals, ballets — each brought to life by his keen sense of architecture, color, and character. From the first pencil line to the final cue, Wong shows how design doesn’t just support a play — it shapes its soul.

About the artist:
A native of San Francisco and a graduate of Yale, Carey Wong has served as the resident designer for Portland Opera since 1978 and has designed for major companies across the United States, Canada, and Asia. His portfolio includes productions for Seattle Opera, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Pacific Northwest Ballet, among many others. Known for his meticulous model-building and emotionally tuned aesthetics, Wong has been a mentor to generations of theatre artists, proving that storytelling begins long before the lights go up.

Cooler Pairing: Lucky Envelope Brewing Fresh Hop Fresh Friends
After walking through Wong’s world of sketches and spotlight dreams as part of Tacoma Arts Month, join us at Peaks & Pints and open a can of Lucky Envelope Brewing Fresh Hop Fresh Friends — bright, resinous, and humming with creative energy. Brewed in community and meant to be shared, it mirrors the spirit of collaboration that drives every production. Drink it while the hops — and the inspiration — are still fresh.
