SUNDAY, JUNE 12 2016: South Sound events + craft beer

Post rock + Wingman Brewers = zest
Cerebral Jazz + Sunday Beer Sampler = Scenes

WEAR YOUR SPACE PANTS

Compass & Knife is a local, four-piece instrumental band that draws influence from ambient, shoegaze and post-rock sounds. Bassist Austin Patterson, guitarist Garrett Werner, pianist/guitarist Jordan Brokaw and drummer Patrick Smith create music that is happy, sad, quiet, heavy, dark, hopeful, introspective, existential, and any other feeling you care to project. The band performs with Los Angeles space rock band Barrows and Tacoma progressive rock band Rest, Repose at 8 p.m. in The New Frontier Lounge.
PREFUNK: You’ve heard of Gose. It’s German, a sour beer. Pronounced “Go-zuh,” like the thing that wrecked New York in Ghostbusters. Reported to be between 200 and 1,000 years old, it’s sour and salty, a low-ABV session beer, which means it won’t get you sauced. Wingman Brewers brewed an excellent Lime Gose. Made with Pacific Northwest barley, Washington wheat, lime juice, lime zest and smoked sea salt Wingman’s Lime Gose delivers a one-two punch of lemon and lime tartness, though not so tart that you feel the enamel being ripped from your teeth. Wingman’s Tacoma taproom opens at 2 p.m.

CEREBRAL JAZZ

The Northwest trio of guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop were first heard together on the 2001 release Scenes. Today, the trio performs as “Scenes,” exploring free flowing yet highly melodic ensemble playing. Scenes will perform their cerebral jazz with guitarist Dave Peterson at Marine View Church’s 5 p.m. “Jazz LIVE at Marine View” series.
PREFUNK: Pint Defiance doesn’t offer beer flights, but rather a popular “Sunday Beer Sampler” from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Manager R.J. Adler runs the Sampler, choosing four, 4-ounce pours from bottles out of the cooler, centered around a theme — a specific brewery, certain beer style, holidays, topical event or, if he can, his favorite sours. Today, he’s pouring Samples of California un-common brews — beers beyond the usual rotators. Expect to drink Ballast Point Homework Series Batch 7 Session Saison, Lagunitas Lucky 13 Red Ale, Knee Deep Hoptologist and Alpine Mandarin Nectar.
