SUMMARY:South Sound by Southwest Double IPA Release Parties
DESCRIPTION:South Sound by Southwest Double IPA Release Parties\nSouth Sound by Southwest mania is upon us\, and chances are your social-media channels are already being inundated with chatter about Southwest Washington breweries rocking Pierce County craft beer bars Friday\, May 10. “On behalf of the Pierce County craft beer scene (myself included)\, I’d like to apologize for just how obnoxious Friday\, May 10 will be during SSXSW\,” says Ben Chase\, manager at Rainier Growlers on South Hill\, Puyallup. “Extra apologies for any and all usage of the term ‘killing it\,’ gratuitous name-dropping (‘Oh\, hey\, [insert celebrity here]’)\, photos of long lines waiting for the official roving SSXSW Van\, and whining about how tired we are. That said\, our collaboration double IPA will rock\, and it deserves the extra attention.” \nIndeed. Chase\, Parkway Tavern manager Sean Jackson and Peaks and Pints co-owner Ron Swarner jumped in the touring van to Vancouver\, Washington and brewed a double IPA at Brothers Cascadia Brewing with Grains of Wraith Brewing and Trap Door Brewing on April 3\, 2019. Brewer Matt Fields of Brothers Cascadia grabbed the lead during the brewing day with Grains of Wrath Head Brewer Mike Hunsaker\, Trap Door Head Brewer Zane Singleton and Brothers Cascadia Head Brewer Jason Bos singing backup while making sure the Pierce County craft beer bar folks kept full glasses of their cellared craft beer. As metal filled the Vancouver brewery\, the group realized music was a common bond\, therefore South Sound by Southwest Double IPA\, a play off the famous Austin\, Texas music festival\, seemed a logically name. The after party was ridiculous. \nPlaying off the three-breweries/three-venues theme\, South Sound by Southwest IIPA rocks three hops — Amarillo\, Strata and El Dorado\, including a roadie bringing in a bunch of Amarillo Cryo hops. All aboard! This I…I…I…IPA will also be a hazy train thanks to flaked oats and wheat. Strata and El Dorado shred dueling lead guitars with tropical aromas and flavors fronting Amarillo plucking a ruby red grapefruit and orange bass. The flavors will jump on your palate like they’re taking stage at the Tacoma Dome. \nBeginning at 5 p.m. Friday\, May 10\, Rainier Growlers\, Parkway Tavern and Peaks and Pints will tap South Sound by Southwest IIPA\, as well as different beers from the three collaborating breweries. A van will circulate between the three craft beer bars from 6-10 p.m. Uber is also encouraged as a way to taste all the beers. \n“South Sound by Southwest isn’t a beer festival\, a music festival or a fashion festival — it’s a big bundle of everything rolled into one spring\, Pierce County night\,” adds Chase. “You’ll drink delicious beer that you’re unlikely to see in your own backyard\, find something thrilling\, meet some cool people\, listen to some rocking recorded music\, and perhaps even plan a day touring Southwest Washington breweries. SSXSW has an array of options available that are sure to knock your glasses off.” \nThe South Sound by Southwest folks suggest beginning at 5 p.m. inside Rainier Growlers\, but you may go your own way. \nSOUTH SOUND BY SOUTHWEST DOUBLE IPA RELEASE PARTIES\, 5-10 p.m. Friday\, May 10\, Rainier Growlers (13105 Meridian E.\, Puyallup)\, Parkway Tavern (313 N. I St.\, Tacoma)\, Peaks and Pints (3816 N. 26th St.\, Tacoma)\, no cover charge

SUMMARY:Have A Heart Night
DESCRIPTION:Have A Heart Night\n“Hey buddy. You have a second?” Parkway Tavern Manager Sean Jackson asked\, motioning me over to one of the high-top tables by the Peaks and Pints coolers. \nJackson eyes were glossy\, which usually means he’s holding a Cantillon or some other crazy delicious lambic. \nNot this time. \n“I need your help\,” he choked out. “One of the baby girls in the neighborhood is in dire straits. I want to help raise money for her medical bills. You in?” \n“Yup\,” I replied really not needing any more explanation. \nJackson painted the tragic picture. Healthy\, active\, stubborn\, funny 12-year-old Ella was doing summer — volunteer camp counselor for Metro Parks\, swimming\, babysitting\, and hanging with sister\, Olivia\, enjoying The Office\, Billy Joel and their dogs. Mid-August she suddenly vomited. No symptoms; a diet change didn’t improve the situation. In fact\, it became worse. Her family history put her heart in the spotlight. After weeks and a steady line of shoulder shrugs by medical professionals\, an echocardiogram revealed she had severe heart failure\, dilated cardiomyopathy. She had been dying for weeks due to a lack of blood flow to her internal organs\, which all showed signs of damage. \nMary Bridge and Seattle Children’s Hospital summoned their best\, holding her Ella’s hand through procedures and surgeries many adults couldn’t handle. A second — yes second\, grueling open-heart surgery attaching another left ventricular assist device — happened a month ago in which Ella’s heart stopped for several minutes. The device allows her to function again\, even work math problems in a hospital school. \nToday\, Ella is waiting for her third surgery to receive a healthier hearty. Her parents have partnered with the non-profit Children’s Organ Transplant Association\, or COTA — experts at raising tax deductible funds to help pay for\, well\, life. COTA doesn’t take a portion of the donations; all donations go directly to the families they support to cover transplant related expenses. \nThe two blubbering beer dorks agreed to host simultaneous fundraisers\, partnering with craft breweries that have bigger hearts than their mash tuns. \n“Do you think Ben over at Rainier Growlers will want to help?” Jackson asked. \n“F@#% yeah\,” we said in unison \nIndeed\, Ben Chase is in\, joining the Parkway Tavern and Peaks & Pints at 6 p.m. Wednesday\, Oct. 30. The Parkway will tap a treasure from Georgetown Brewing\, Rainier Growlers will pour 7 Seas Brewing\, and Peaks & Pints will have Double Mountain Brewery flowing from our Western red cedar tap log. One hundred percent of the money will go toward Ella’s medical expense bills via COTA.

SUMMARY:Tacoma Beer Week Bus Tour 2022
DESCRIPTION:Tacoma Beer Week Bus Tour 2022\nSean Jackson\, Ben Chase\, and I donned the biggest smiles as we gently stirred hops in a steam powered kettle while Alan Sprints watched. We were brewing the last batch of beer brewed at the famed Hair of the Dog Brewery in Portland\, Oregon\, before founder Sprints would close his brewhouse. It was an honor to brew on the same 4-barrel system where Sprints created Fred\, Adam\, and other historic beers. Our smiles enlarged when our kettlesession produced the Tacoma Beer Week Bus 2022 idea — a bus tour between the Parkway Tavern\, Rainier Growlers\, and Peaks & Pints\, our beer jobs\, respectively\, featuring “Alan” on tap\, as well as draft options from Stemma Brewing and Moonraker Brewing. Yes\, even though Sprints humbly argued against the name\, we appropriately named the hoppy Belgian style strong ale after the man who brewed big\, bold\, barrel-aged beers before the Pacific Northwest knew it wanted them. We can tell you’ll want “Alan” when you ride the bus Thursday\, Aug. 11 during Tacoma Beer Week. \nOur Hair of the Dog brewing experience maxed out our smiles when Bottleworks in Seattle\, Apex Beer Bar in Portland\, and longtime craft brewer/sales executive/spokesperson Kenny T. Beerman joined us at the brewery\, which became Sprints’ headquarters after he moved the original 1993 brewery near the Brooklyn rail yards in Southeast Portland. Fun fact: When Sprints wasn’t looking\, Beerman tossed an extra handful of Sultana hops into the kettle. After tasting “Alan” at Bottleworks last month\, if you love hops\, then you’ll appreciate Beerman’s extra effort. \nAdding Stemma and Moonraker into the Tacoma Beer Week Bus fold arose during our post brewing adventures around Portland. The two notable breweries aren’t readily available in the South Sound. The Parkway\, Rainier Growlers and Peaks & Pints will tap different Stemma and Moonraker beers next to “Alan” making each bus stop even more exciting. \nMore details on the bus route will arrive soon. \nTACOMA BEER WEEK BUS 2022\, 6-9 p.m.\, Thursday\, Aug. 11\, Parkway Tavern at 313 N. I St. Tacoma\, Rainier Growlers at 13105 Meridian Ave. E. South Hill Puyallup\, Peaks & Pints at 3816 N. 26th St. Tacoma \nLINK: Peaks & Pints cooler inventory
