SUMMARY:Peaks and Pints: A Barleywine Carol
DESCRIPTION:We all grew up with Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Whether we read the book\, watched the movies\, or caught a theatrical production of the age-old story\, a holiday season didn’t get by us without Ebeneezer Scrooge making an appearance. And whatever your preferred method of dosing on Dickens was\, it would be an injustice\, and probably land you on that weird jolly guy’s naughty list\, if you skipped A Barleywine Carol at Peaks and Pints at Basecamp Proctor. OK\, the title is Peaks and Pints: A Barleywine Carol\, which is acceptable since it sure as hell isn’t Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This musical version retains none of the literary classic than might reasonably be expected\, although it’s also accurate to state that a key ingredient of the novel — namely\, its humanist spirit — is largely present\, from the jolly crowd\, to the flights of Barleywine\, to the live bluegrass by Tacoma’s Barleywine Revue. \nFor the back story on A Barleywine Carol\, click here. \nA BARLEYWINE CAROL\, 7 p.m.\, Thursday\, Dec. 22\, peaks and Pints\, 3816 N. 26th St.\, Basecamp Proctor\, Tacoma\, no cover \n

SUMMARY:A Barleywine Carol
DESCRIPTION:A Barleywine Carol\nYou fancy yourself cultured\, don’t you? You do. It’s so obvious. If only you knew how obvious it is. You’re one of the special people: You’ve been to Europe (Eastern Europe\, no less)\, you speak French\, you’re dying to get to Hong Kong\, you’ve at least tried to read Proust (and\, as it was last year\, it’s a resolution for the new year)\, you love both Spike Jonze and Douglas Sirk. We’re impressed. \nBet you ain’t never drank no barleywine\, fancy pants. Peaks and Pints offers you the chance to enjoy a half dozen or more at 7 p.m. Thursday\, Dec. 20. It’s our annual A Barleywine Carol party where we pair barleywines with live bluegrass from Tacoma’s amazing Barleywine Revue band. It’s a hoot. \nDespite its name\, the barleywine is indeed a beer but at wine strength — ranging as low as 7-percent alcohol by volume in British versions and upwards of 15 percent in American interpretations. The focus is traditionally on big malts\, though American brewers tend to hop them up\, which provides even more diversity and interesting flavors across the board. \nBarleywine is a huge beer\, both in flavor and alcohol content. It’s the color of deep maple wood; it has a tiny head and not all that much carbonation. As a result\, it sort of glides past the taste buds. Unlike most of those Frankenstein beers that have fruit added to them\, nothing’s forced or contrived about barleywine. It is what it is: a big\, brawny beer\, one that will fill you up\, then lay you down on the floor and give you sweet\, sweet kisses on the cheek. \nA BARLEYWINE CAROL\, 7 p.m. Thursday\, Dec. 20\, Peaks and Pints\, 3816 N. 26th St.\, Basecamp Proctor\, Tacoma\, no cover

SUMMARY:Fezziwig Barleywine Ball
DESCRIPTION:Fezziwig Barleywine Ball\n“Why\, it’s old Fezziwig! Bless his heart\, it’s Fezziwig alive again!” exclaimed Ebenezer Scrooge\, in a brief moment of joy. \nWe all have touchstones that bring the simple spirit of Christmas to our harried\, mall-besotted souls. For some\, it’s the telling of “A Christmas Carol”. For others\, it could be a long-treasured card or the smell of baking cookies. For Peaks and Pints\, it’s a barleywine tap takeover paired with live bluegrass by the Barleywine Revue. Once again\, Peaks and Pints offers 10 barleywines and foot-stompin’ bluegrass at our annual Fezziwig Barleywine Ball at 7 p.m. Thursday\, Dec. 19. It’s going to be a hoot. \nFezziwig is a character from the 1843 novella A Christmas Carol created by Charles Dickens to provide contrast with Ebenezer Scrooge’s attitudes toward business ethics. He was Scrooge’s boss and hosted an annual\, lively holiday party. He was always happy and focused on appreciation of his employees\, a trait that Scrooge later abandoned. \nBarleywine Revue credits itself simply as a bluegrass band\, but to hear it\, the band somehow transforms that format into something more. Depending on whose lead vocals you get (in a very egalitarian move\, the members trade off lead vocal duty)\, you’ll either find yourself in a jumping jam like “Sunshine in Tacoma\,” a Fleet Foxes-esque reverie like “Burb on the Rocks” or “Peaks and Pints\,” a love story between a man\, beer and a mountain. Regardless\, you’re guaranteed to find flawless harmonies and impeccable musicianship Thursday night. \nPEAKS AND PINTS FEZZIWIG BARLEYWINE BALL\, 7 p.m. Thursday\, Dec. 19\, Peaks and Pints\, 3816 N. 26th St.\, Basecamp Proctor\, Tacoma\, no cover

SUMMARY:A Barleywine Carol
DESCRIPTION:A Barleywine Carol\nA mean-spirited\, miserly old man named Shaw Moore sits in his fire-suppression business on a frigid Dec. 22 night. His clerk is bored to tears because Moore refuses to spend money on barleywine and Christmas music. Moore’s nephew\, Scruggs\, pays his uncle a visit and invites him to “A Barleywine Carol” at Peaks & Pints Thursday\, Dec. 22. Moore reacts to his nephew’s invite visitors with bitterness and venom\, spitting out an angry “Bah barleywine and Christmas carols!” in response to his nephew’s “Merry Christmas!” \nLater that night in his dark\, cold apartment\, Moore receives a chilling visitation from the ghost of his dead partner\, Chuck Cranston\, followed by adventures with the ghosts of Christmas Barleywines Past\, Present\, and Future. Deeply moved and shedding tears of regret\, the final ghost returns Moore to his bed. \nThursday\, Dec. 22\, Moore awakes with joy for the chance to redeem himself and grateful that he has been returned in time to drink eight different barleywines on tap and hear beer and cider industry folks sing Christmas carols at Peak & Pints. He sends country ham and corn pudding to his clerk’s house and attends the 5 p.m. “A Barleywine Carol” party to the stifled surprise of the other guests. \nAs the years go by\, Moore holds true to his promise and honors barleywine and Christmas music with all his heart. \nA BARLEYWINE CAROL\, 5 p.m.\, Thursday\, Dec. 22\, Peaks & Pints\, 3816 N. 26th St.\, Basecamp Proctor\, Tacoma\, no cover \nLINK: Peaks & Pints cooler inventory

SUMMARY:Old Scrooge: A Silver City Love Story
DESCRIPTION:Old Scrooge: A Silver City Love Story\nWell\, it’s that time of year again. Christmas. We all know what that means. Twenty-four-hour marathons of A Christmas Story on TBS. Gaudy lights tacked onto just about every house in the suburbs. Overcrowded stores and that annual homage to Charlie Brown’s puny little tree. Oh\, and then there’s our favorite — Old Scrooge: A Silver City Love Story at Peaks & Pints\, which will turn the first page at 5 p.m. Thursday\, Dec. 5. \nIt’s not hard to see how Silver City Brewery would be thought a good fit for their English barleywine to adapt the dearly beloved (and much lampooned) Dickens tale that has survived nearly two centuries of retelling if you count the Flintstone\, Muppet\, and Barbie versions. After all\, Silver City owner Scott Houmes is as jolly as Fezziwig and his sales executives — Mike Lay\, Paul Whitcomb and Sean Larson — are spirits in the material world. At last year’s Scrooge Party at Peaks\, Lay’s Christmas Past levitated into our lodge-like room\, his fiber-optic fairy gown glowing like memory\, and Whitcomb’s 7-foot Christmas Present towered over the room\, embroidered robe hanging coniferously from his shoulders\, chortling as partygoers string tinsel on him. And Larson’s Christmas Future arrived obscure and menacing as always\, a black-cloaked figure wordlessly drawing a world-shrouding night behind him. Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses? \nLike last year\, the tale in all its 21st-century Bremerton splendor will come to life courtesy of Silver City\, which has been producing the Old Scrooge beer adaptation of the classic old ale and barleywine since 2009\, replete with long boil time\, cool fermentation\, and extended aging. Old Scrooge Christmas Ale dark\, malty ale offers notes of apple\, cherry and apricot. Suffice it to say\, it’ll warm your heart and entire body. \nEncore: In addition to Silver City’s Old Scrooge Christmas Ale 2024\, and Bourbon Barrel Aged Old Scrooge Christmas Ale 2024\, Silver City will pour their Pilsner\, Dark Lager and Ridgetop Red at Peaks & Pints Thursday. \nOLD SCROOGE: A SILVER CITY LOVE STORY\, 5-8 p.m.\, Thursday\, Dec. 5\, Peaks & Pints\, 3816 N. 26th St.\, Basecamp Proctor\, Tacoma \nLINK: Peaks & Pints beer and cider cooler inventory

OK\, the title is Peaks & Pints: A Barleywine Carol 2024\, which is acceptable since it sure as hell isn’t Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Our version retains none of the literary classic than might reasonably be expected\, although it’s also accurate to state that a key ingredient of the novel — namely\, its humanist spirit — will largely present\, as town folk enjoy our barleywine tap takeover from open to close Monday\, Dec. 23\, leaving plenty of time for the Three Spirits to visit those who need a spirit bump before Christmas morning. \nPEAKS AND PINTS: A BARLEYWINE CAROL 2024\, 11 a.m. Monday\, Dec. 23\, 3816 N. 26th St.\, Basecamp Proctor\, Tacoma\, no cover \nLINK: Peaks & Pints beer and cider cooler inventory

SUMMARY:A Barleywine Carol 2025
DESCRIPTION:“A Barleywine Carol” returns to Peaks & Pints on Christmas Eve as a daylight celebration of one of beer’s most patient\, generous\, and misunderstood styles. This special midday mini-festival leans into Fezziwig joy rather than midnight hauntings\, offering a warm\, communal send-off to the year before we close for the holiday. \nFrom 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, we’ll pour ten barleywines spanning English and American traditions\, including a rare Fort George Etymology vertical featuring the 2023\, 2024\, and 2025 releases. Each year explores the evolving meaning of barleywine through extended barrel aging and layered blends\, turning time itself into a drinkable conversation. \nThroughout the afternoon\, the Ghosts of Barleywine Past\, Present\, and Future quietly make their rounds\, reminding us that the best barleywines are meant to be opened together\, not saved indefinitely. \nNo cover. No speeches. Just thoughtful pours\, shared tables\, and a few unspoken revelations before the holiday begins. \nA Barleywine Carol\nWednesday\, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)11 a.m.–4 p.m.Peaks & Pints3816 N. 26th St.\, Basecamp Proctor\, TacomaClosed afterward for Christmas Eve \nLINK: Peaks & Pints beer and cider cooler inventory
