The beer born in 1893 at the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company\, Rainier sits in our cooler\, as well as permanently flows from our Western red cedar tap log. It’s a no-brainier that Rainier hugging\, tree hugging Peaks and Pints hosts Rainier Beer For Tacoma Trees Saturday\, March 30\, an opportunity for Tacomans to have a beer or two in the craft beer lodge and learn more about some of the organizations and programs dedicated to sustaining and increasing the number of trees in the City of Destiny. Forty cents for every Rainier beer sold during to Rainier Beer For Tacoma Trees will be donated to the Tacoma Tree Foundation. \nIn addition to Rainier\, the Tacoma Tree Foundation and City of Tacoma will advocate for more trees in Tacoma at Peaks and Pints March 30. Founded in 2018\, The Tacoma Tree Foundation empowers community members to plant and care for trees in Tacoma. A TTTF representative will be on hand to speak and answer questions about their newly-formed non-profit. Cascade Regional Blood Services blood drives enable local restaurants and pubs to support our community’s blood supply in a unique and fun way. DESCRIPTION:American Beauty Night at Peaks and Pints\nSaturday\, April 13 is Record Store Day\, an event created 12 years ago to salute independent record stores and generate interest in them with a slew of new vinyl releases made available that day. (Never mind the fact that for some\, every day is Record Store Day\, really.). Peaks and Pints celebrates the day\, actually two days earlier\, every year with Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales. Thursday\, April 11\, Dogfish Head returns to Peaks and Pints for a pre-Record Store Day celebration. Every year\, the Baltimore brewery creates the official beer of Record Store Day; this year they return to a classic — their American Beauty pale ale brewed with their longtime friends the Grateful Dead. Brewed to 6.5 percent ABV to commemorate the year the Grateful Dead was formed (1965)\, American Beauty is an all-American pale ale infused with granola and succulent wildflower honey. First concocted back in 2012\, American Beauty sits in Peaks and Pints’ cooler in 12-ounce bottles with red\, white and blue packaging featuring the band’s iconic dancing bears. April 11\, we’ll tap American Beauty\, as well as other Dogfish Head beers Sirecusa Nera imperial stout\, World Wide Stout\, Barrel-Aged Palo Santo\, last year’s Record Store Beer\, Dragons and Yum Yum Pale Ale\, and many other Dogfish beers. \nIt’s easy to get cynical about what Record Store Day has become. Nowadays there are huge lines and the limited-edition release you’ve been eyeing gets gobbled up and sold on eBay for a big profit. But let’s keep our eye on the ball here — you’re still feel the collective excitement and anxiety joining music dweebs in line talking about music and whatever limited thing they wanted that day\, you’re spending the day surrounded by great music and\, in doing so\, supporting an ever-important local institution. Here in Tacoma\, we’re lucky it’s “institutions” with an “s\,” thanks to the likes Hi-Voltage Records\, Rocket Records and House of Records. Owners Charles and Rose Ann Finkel had opened specialty beer importer Merchant Du Vin 11 years earlier\, bringing their favorite ales in England\, fruit beers in Belgium and pils\, dunkels and dopplebocks in Bavaria to the States. At the time there were only three other craft brewers in Washington state and IPAs were hard to find on tap or in bottle. A lot transpired at the brewery since\, including a name change to the Pike Brewing Company\, but Charles and Rose Ann still proudly own the brewery and the history of beer museum that doubles as their restaurant and taproom. Thursday\, April 18\, Peaks and Pints will cheers Pike Brewing’s 30th anniversary pouring the Seattle brewery’s latest beers and hosting past and present Pike brewers. \nOn that fateful day in October 1989\, The World’s Shortest Non-Motorized Uphill Parade marched toward Pike Place Brewery to officially open the brewery’s doors. Leading the parade was Liberty Malt Supply’s John Farias\, pushing a keg of Pike Pale Ale in a silver\, two-wheeled hand truck. Following were the Finkels\, Franz and Angela Inselkammer from Bavaria’s Ayinger Brewery\, and Pike Brewing’s first brewer\, Jason Parker. Parker will join current Piker brewer\, Art Dixon\, who began brewing at age 7\, and went on to be the head brewer at Pyramid Brewery. DESCRIPTION:South Sound by Southwest Double IPA Release Parties\nSouth Sound by Southwest mania is upon us\, and chances are your social-media channels are already being inundated with chatter about Southwest Washington breweries rocking Pierce County craft beer bars Friday\, May 10. “On behalf of the Pierce County craft beer scene (myself included)\, I’d like to apologize for just how obnoxious Friday\, May 10 will be during SSXSW\,” says Ben Chase\, manager at Rainier Growlers on South Hill\, Puyallup. “Extra apologies for any and all usage of the term ‘killing it\,’ gratuitous name-dropping (‘Oh\, hey\, [insert celebrity here]’)\, photos of long lines waiting for the official roving SSXSW Van\, and whining about how tired we are. That said\, our collaboration double IPA will rock\, and it deserves the extra attention.” \nIndeed. Chase\, Parkway Tavern manager Sean Jackson and Peaks and Pints co-owner Ron Swarner jumped in the touring van to Vancouver\, Washington and brewed a double IPA at Brothers Cascadia Brewing with Grains of Wraith Brewing and Trap Door Brewing on April 3\, 2019. Brewer Matt Fields of Brothers Cascadia grabbed the lead during the brewing day with Grains of Wrath Head Brewer Mike Hunsaker\, Trap Door Head Brewer Zane Singleton and Brothers Cascadia Head Brewer Jason Bos singing backup while making sure the Pierce County craft beer bar folks kept full glasses of their cellared craft beer. As metal filled the Vancouver brewery\, the group realized music was a common bond\, therefore South Sound by Southwest Double IPA\, a play off the famous Austin\, Texas music festival\, seemed a logically name. The after party was ridiculous. \nPlaying off the three-breweries/three-venues theme\, South Sound by Southwest IIPA rocks three hops — Amarillo\, Strata and El Dorado\, including a roadie bringing in a bunch of Amarillo Cryo hops. All aboard! This I…I…I…IPA will also be a hazy train thanks to flaked oats and wheat. Strata and El Dorado shred dueling lead guitars with tropical aromas and flavors fronting Amarillo plucking a ruby red grapefruit and orange bass. The flavors will jump on your palate like they’re taking stage at the Tacoma Dome. \nBeginning at 5 p.m. Friday\, May 10\, Rainier Growlers\, Parkway Tavern and Peaks and Pints will tap South Sound by Southwest IIPA\, as well as different beers from the three collaborating breweries. A van will circulate between the three craft beer bars from 6-10 p.m. Uber is also encouraged as a way to taste all the beers. \n“South Sound by Southwest isn’t a beer festival\, a music festival or a fashion festival — it’s a big bundle of everything rolled into one spring\, Pierce County night\,” adds Chase. “You’ll drink delicious beer that you’re unlikely to see in your own backyard\, find something thrilling\, meet some cool people\, listen to some rocking recorded music\, and perhaps even plan a day touring Southwest Washington breweries. The Gig Harbor brewery — named after the Prohibition days where citizens voted wet or dry — has finally released can versions of their delicious craft beer\, and Peaks and Pints will host the Can-Can release party\, beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday\, May 30. \nWest Pierce Fire and Rescue firefighters Bryan Copeland and Aaron Johnson are the brewers and co-owners behind the business\, along with their wives Molly Copeland and April Johnson. They started planning their brewery for years\, but didn’t get serious until 2012. They opened in Gig Harbor in 2015 on a 3.5-barrel brewing system\, with three 7-barrel bright tanks and four 7-barrel fermenters\, which has been replaced by a much larger system. \nThe love affair with the Prohibition era is particularly evident at Wet Coast Brewing. In the 1932 presidential election\, King\, Pierce\, and Spokane counties voted “wet\,” meaning those citizens voted for Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt and his desire to bring back the drinkies\, instead of Republican Pres. Herbert Hoover’s desire to keep “the noble experiment\,” Prohibition. In addition\, Wet Coast beers give a nod to Prohibition days\, for instance “Hi Jack!” was used in speakeasies as a code word for law enforcement. \nAs you enjoy music from the Prohibition years\, you may sip Wet Coast treasure tapped on our Western red cedar tap log\, or have a bartender pop open West Coast cans. … \nWHISPER SISTER HAZY PALE: An easy drinking pale brewed with a hefty dose of oats. Inspired\, we’ll tap a few beers that have spent some time in spent bourbon barrels\, too. \nWhy? Because barrel aging is totally a thing. Well\, it has been for centuries. Before industrialization\, Europeans fermented beer in wood\, stored and shipped in wood\, and poured directly from wood. Beer spoiled often. Life was hard. By the mid-20th century\, most breweries had happily traded their temperamental wooden barrels for the reliability and convenience of metal tanks. Beer spoiled less. Life was decent. However\, brewers and cidermakers have long known that wood-aging can add flavor and depth to beer\, especially if said barrel previously contained bourbon. The result is a beer and cider more complex than most\, as additional flavors bleed from inside the staves — deeper woody notes that play to the liquid’s base and an extended taste that finishes with a nip of booze. \nThis year\, Tieton’s popular Bourbon Barrel Peach cider (6.9%) was aged in previously used Dry Fly bourbon barrels. Aging in bourbon barrels gives the cider deep\, rich notes of vanilla and spice. DESCRIPTION:Two Beers Climb For A Cause Benefit\nIn July 2019\, Two Beers Brewing and Seattle Cider Co. are sending eight of their staff to Mount Rainier’s summit in order to raise money for Washington’s National Park Fund\, or WNPF\, the official philanthropic partner of Mount Rainier\, North Cascades and Olympic National Parks. The funds raised by WNPF help fund 50-75 projects annually in these parks\, which the staffs at Two Beers and Seattle Cider visit\, climb and bike monthly\, if not weekly. \nPeaks and Pints will host a fundraiser for that WNPF Climb For A Cause team at 6 p.m. Thursday\, June 6. In addition to games\, raffle prizes\, beer and cider\, donations will be accepted\, as well as Peaks and Pints contributing portions of draft sales that night. \nBeginning their partnership in 2016\, Two Beers Brewing has been raising funds for WNPF through sales of their flagship brew\, Wonderland Trail IPA\, and a series of fundraising events. In 2018 Two Beers raised $25\,000 for WNPF\, surpassing their $20\,000 goal\, and sent a team of eight to summit Mount Rainier with the help of International Mountain Guides (IMG). On summit day in 2018\, due to dangerous avalanche conditions\, the Two Beers Climb for a Cause team watched the sunrise from Disappointment Cleaver\, 12\,300-foot elevation and only 2\,000 feet shy of the summit. Hungry for a summit this year\, Two Beers’ Climb Team captain Kristen Oliphant calls her journey\, “the greatest physical and mental challenge I could endure.
