Peaks and Pints also thinks outside the box proven when we pair The Vintage Baker’s cupcakes with Urban Family Brewing’s “Heart” sours for the inaugural Peaks and Pints Pastry Pairing Pop-up at 6 p.m. Wednesday\, Feb. 5. Five Urban Family sours will be paired with three Duggan cupcakes\, including at least one cupcake made with one of the beers. So\, you’ll be fine when Peaks & Pints taps 10 hoppy\, bitter beers at 11 a.m. Friday\, Feb. 7\, launching the 10-day Washington Hop Mob Roadshow across Western Washington. According to organizer Kendall Jones of the Washington Beer Blog\, triple IPAs are no longer a participation requirement. \n“This year\, we decided to switch things up a bit and create a different set of requirements\,” writes Jones. “While some beer fans were saddened to hear that we’d dropped the triple IPA requirement\, it turns out a lot of the breweries decided to make triple IPA anyway. The new requirement simply stated that the beers feature a complete expression of hop character and clock in at no less than 50 IBU (International Bitterness Units). … there’s no shortage of triple IPAs\, but there are plenty of other hoppy creations as well.” \nBesides\, IPAs and other beers with heavy use of bittering hops seem to be normalizing toward nuances of flavoring instead of giant sand wedges to the palate. Modern brewers are taking on more of a chef’s role by experimenting with hops in a way that hasn’t been meticulously studied. \nPast Washington Hop Mob drinkers will be happy to know that while the bitterness requirements might be slightly less this year\, brewers still drank all the IPAs before naming their creations. Boneyard Beer and Avid Cider Co. will be on one side of our lodge with Bale Breaker Brewing and Tieton Cider Works on the other\, with the warfare beginning at 6 p.m. \nWe can all probably agree that actual drunken warfare would not be a good time for anyone. However\, adding alcohol to the innocent card game War makes for fantastic fun. Technically\, the rules don’t force anyone to drink\, but expect plenty of prizes\, and\, of course\, delicious craft beer and cider. \nWar is one of the easiest card games to learn. All you need is Peaks & Points’ giant deck of cards. \nHere are the rules of War: \n\nEach craft beer regional team gets 10 cards.\nEvery turn\, both teams flip over the top card in their deck.\nWhoever draws the higher card takes both cards and puts them at the bottom of their deck (Aces are higher than Kings).\nIf the cards are the same number\, this begins a war.\nDuring a war each team first puts down one card upside down\, and then draws another face up. Whoever wins this flip takes all the cards in the pile.\nIf the second draw is another match\, the war continues.\n\nAdditional Rules for Peaks and Pints Party Games War: \n\nAll guests receive a raffle ticket. Two tickets will be assigned a craft beer regional team before each game. On this date\, we will pour his famous Fred strong ale and its four variants from our Western red cedar tap log\, plus draft pours of his Adam old ale\, Doggie Claw barleywine and Polka Dot IPA. It’s a mini FredFest that we’re calling Hair of the Dog: Fab Five Fred Live. \nIt is a testament to Fred Eckhardt’s greatness that the real\, annual Hair of the Dog FredFest keeps happening\, year after year\, with a rare assortment of hand-selected beers and tens of thousands of dollars raised for select nonprofits. The Portland beer writer\, columnist\, historian and icon\, fondly known as the Dean of American Beer Writers\, passed away Aug. 10\, 2015\, at age 89\, nine years after a surprise party for his 80th birthday launched FredFest at Hair of the Dog Brewing. \nEckhardt’s book\, A Treatise on Lager Beers\, published in 1969\, was the first modern book about beer. During his stint as the Oregonian’s first beer columnist he penned The Essentials of Beer Style\, helping many homebrewers understand their craft and in turn helped launch many craft brewing careers\, including Hair of the Dog Brewery’s Sprints\, who created an American Strong Ale simply named Fred. Fred\, the beer\, is a deep golden color. It is made with aromatic and rye malts and includes 10 different hop varieties — Northern Brewer\, Progress\, First Gold\, Crystal\, Fuggle\, Willamette\, Tettnang\, Chinook\, Spalt\, Saaz and Strisselspalt for caramel\, bitter hops and some alcohol. \nPeople have been making pilgrimages to Portland\, Oregon for Sprints’ beer since the dark ages — back when hazy and sour beers weren’t made that way intentionally. The college town is also home to some of the state’s best breweries and cideries. Peaks and Pints will tap the latest from two Corvallis craft institutions 2 Towns Ciderhouse and Block 15 Brewing at 6 p.m. Thursday\, March 5. \nThe idyllic little city of Corvallis\, which sits snug against the Willamette River about an hour and a half south of Portland\, is home to the state’s agricultural college\, which also has a respected fermentation-sciences program. Oregon State University’s Fermentation Science program\, one of just a handful in the nation\, is a “hands-on” applied science addressing the use of microorganisms as processing agents in the production of alcoholic beverages\, as well as a variety of other fermented foods such as cheese\, yogurt\, soy sauce\, pickles\, breads and fermented vegetables. DESCRIPTION:3-Way\, 2 Ways\, Your Way Friday\nJoin Peaks & Pints and Rainier Growlers Friday\, June 26 as the two craft beer bars tap Fort George Brewery’s 3-Way IPA\, as well as draft from Structures Brewing and Level Beer. The Tacoma Proctor District and South Hill Puyallup bottle shops will also have very limited 3-Way cans. \nAstoria’s Fort George Brewery has brewed 3-Way IPA since 2013\, featuring two different craft brewery collaborators every year. This year\, Bellingham’s Structures Brewing and Portland’s Level Beer Co. shared ideas and techniques with Chris Nemlowill of Fort George\, and after a few beta batches — the final 2020 Fort George 3-Way IPA hits the South Sound Friday. Peaks & Pints and Rainier Growlers grabbed early tastes and we’re happy to report its one of the best 3-Ways yet. Built on a foundation of Pilsner malt\, spelt\, and flaked oats\, plus dry hopped with ridiculous levels of Simcoe\, Azacca\, Citra\, and Chinook hops\, this year’s 3-Way has a hazy\, fruity nose\, followed by crisp\, smooth\, citrus/grassy/melon/dank flavor. \nPeaks and Rainier will have 32-ounce and 64-ounce growler fills of 3-way\, with Rainier Growlers allowing social distancing seating and Peaks still a to-go operation. The two craft beer bars will also tap Structures easy-drinking Splash Pale Ale. Rainier Growlers will tap several Level beers\, including NW Pilot IPA #2 and I’m Not A Hazy\, I Just Crush A Lot IPA. Peaks will tap Level’s NW Pilot IPA #3 and Level’s social justice collaboration Black Is Beautiful imperial stout. \nThere is no admission fee for these two events. At Rainier Growlers\, you can fill crowlers and growlers\, take home cans of all three breweries\, or drink inside at social distant tables. DESCRIPTION:Peaks and Pints National IPA Day 2020\nAs if we needed an official day to pay homage to the smooth\, delightfully bitter taste of IPA … and yet\, here we are. Today is National IPA Day\, a day when we celebrate the little cone flowers we call hops and the beer style that showcases them: the India Pale Ale. Peaks & Pints will be celebrating the over-hopped beer made famous for its resiliency during long sea voyages by ship by pouring 10 tapped IPAs into our 32-ounce Campfire Crowlers. We’ll be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. so you can carry out cylinders of Boneyard\, Double Mountain\, Fort George\, Kulshan\, Reuben’s\, Ruse\, Structures\, Wayfinder and others\, then discuss the merits of individual hops the same way sommeliers might extol grape varietals around the campfire or around the pile of laundry. \nToday\, Carla would probably pour Norm a hazy IPA while he told the bar about his Milk-Bone underwear. This is not an inherently bad thing. We think critically about the food we eat and the books we read\, so why not about the beers we guzzle? American beer is more interesting and nuanced than ever before\, and it continues to evolve and grow.
