DESCRIPTION:Pike Brewing 30th Anniversary Prefunk\nOct. 17\, 1989\, the Pike Place Brewery\, as it was then known\, officially opened in the old Liberty Malt Supply space under the Pike Place Market on Western Avenue in downtown Seattle. Owners Charles and Rose Ann Finkel had opened specialty beer importer Merchant Du Vin 11 years earlier\, bringing their favorite ales in England\, fruit beers in Belgium and pils\, dunkels and dopplebocks in Bavaria to the States. At the time there were only three other craft brewers in Washington state and IPAs were hard to find on tap or in bottle. A lot transpired at the brewery since\, including a name change to the Pike Brewing Company\, but Charles and Rose Ann still proudly own the brewery and the history of beer museum that doubles as their restaurant and taproom. Thursday\, April 18\, Peaks and Pints will cheers Pike Brewing’s 30th anniversary pouring the Seattle brewery’s latest beers and hosting past and present Pike brewers. \nOn that fateful day in October 1989\, The World’s Shortest Non-Motorized Uphill Parade marched toward Pike Place Brewery to officially open the brewery’s doors. Leading the parade was Liberty Malt Supply’s John Farias\, pushing a keg of Pike Pale Ale in a silver\, two-wheeled hand truck. Following were the Finkels\, Franz and Angela Inselkammer from Bavaria’s Ayinger Brewery\, and Pike Brewing’s first brewer\, Jason Parker. Parker will join current Piker brewer\, Art Dixon\, who began brewing at age 7\, and went on to be the head brewer at Pyramid Brewery. Parker is the co-founder and president of Copperworks Distilling. \nPlease join Peaks and Pints in saluting the third brewery to launch in Washington state\, Pike Brewing\, at 6 p.m. Thursday\, April 18. (Never mind the fact that for some\, every day is Record Store Day\, really.). Peaks and Pints celebrates the day\, actually two days earlier\, every year with Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales. Thursday\, April 11\, Dogfish Head returns to Peaks and Pints for a pre-Record Store Day celebration. Every year\, the Baltimore brewery creates the official beer of Record Store Day; this year they return to a classic — their American Beauty pale ale brewed with their longtime friends the Grateful Dead. Brewed to 6.5 percent ABV to commemorate the year the Grateful Dead was formed (1965)\, American Beauty is an all-American pale ale infused with granola and succulent wildflower honey. First concocted back in 2012\, American Beauty sits in Peaks and Pints’ cooler in 12-ounce bottles with red\, white and blue packaging featuring the band’s iconic dancing bears. April 11\, we’ll tap American Beauty\, as well as other Dogfish Head beers Sirecusa Nera imperial stout\, World Wide Stout\, Barrel-Aged Palo Santo\, last year’s Record Store Beer\, Dragons and Yum Yum Pale Ale\, and many other Dogfish beers. \nIt’s easy to get cynical about what Record Store Day has become. Nowadays there are huge lines and the limited-edition release you’ve been eyeing gets gobbled up and sold on eBay for a big profit. But let’s keep our eye on the ball here — you’re still feel the collective excitement and anxiety joining music dweebs in line talking about music and whatever limited thing they wanted that day\, you’re spending the day surrounded by great music and\, in doing so\, supporting an ever-important local institution. Cascade Regional Blood Services blood drives enable local restaurants and pubs to support our community’s blood supply in a unique and fun way. Peaks and Pints craft beer bar\, bottle shop\, and restaurant in Tacoma’s Proctor District\, will host A Give Blood Get Beer blood drive 1-4 p.m. Sunday\, April 7. \nBut getting back to the Peaks and Pints’ point\, you need to give\, not just because you’re in the mood or because Cascade Regional Blood Services will give you a pint of beer at Peaks and Pints craft beer bar. No\, you need to give because lives are on the balance awaiting your donation. Forty cents for every Rainier beer sold during to Rainier Beer For Tacoma Trees will be donated to the Tacoma Tree Foundation. \nIn addition to Rainier\, the Tacoma Tree Foundation and City of Tacoma will advocate for more trees in Tacoma at Peaks and Pints March 30. Founded in 2018\, The Tacoma Tree Foundation empowers community members to plant and care for trees in Tacoma. A TTTF representative will be on hand to speak and answer questions about their newly-formed non-profit. Mother Earth would appreciate it. \nPatagonia Brewing Co.\, originally from the Patagonia region in South America\, believes life is best lived as an adventure. In an effort to reduce their global carbon footprint and to guarantee freshness\, the brewery is brewing their Bohemian Pilsner in Fort Collins through their “Buy a Case\, Plant a Tree” program. Partnering with the National Forest Foundation\, they will donate one tree to be planted for each case sold; 17 trees for every keg. Ask any coaster house builder and they’ll agree — building a coaster house becomes easier after those first 20 corners are in place. Peaks and Pints isn’t sure if 20 Corners Brewing ran into the same issue and\, therefore\, stopped once they reached 20 corners on their beautiful brewery in Woodinville\, but we do know delicious beer emerges from their 20-cornered structure. \nPeaks and Pints will host 20 Corners Brewing and a beer coaster house building contest at 6 p.m. Thursday\, March 21 in our craft beer bar\, bottle shop and restaurant in Tacoma’s Proctor District. \nThere are several ways to build a house of coasters. The “classic” method that you may have seen in popular media is based on a series of triangular trusses that peak to a point in a card pyramid. Some brewers like using exciting ingredients during fermentation and performing exciting processes such as barrel aging his or her beer\, others also enjoy adding a level of complexity and microbial risk to his or her finished beer. If they don’t control the microorganisms coming out of the brewery and going into bottles\, consumers may receive poor\, inconsistent and even unintentionally sour beer in the bottle. \nHellbent Brewing Co. owner and head brewer Brian Young will discuss the ins and outs of post fermentation in the brewing process at Peaks and Pints’ next SudsPop beer lecture and private concert night at 7 p.m. Wednesday\, March 20. Each SudsPop event features a brewer\, an exclusive one-off beer brewed by the special guest brewer and a chosen artist or band in our East Wing events room. DESCRIPTION:21st Amendment and No-Li Brewhouse 80’s Rock Lip Sync Battle\nBack in the 1980s\, before karaoke really took off\, pretending to be a rock star\, as folks did on Puttin’ on the Hits (or #POTH\, as it would no doubt be called today) was briefly kind of a thing. It’s not clear whether the success of POTH fueled the rise of “air bands\,” or vice versa. But much as auditions for The Voice or Idol today draw thousands of wannabe Kelly Clarksons to open auditions\, POTH held tryouts at malls and rec centers around the country. \nErik Youngren and Mike Lay religiously watched Puttin’ on the Hits\, often watching it while chatting with each other on their landline phones. \n“It is way easier when you don’t have to actually sing. Especially\, if you can’t sing. Lip sync is way better. I understand why all the stars do it\,” said Mike Lay. The Oligarchs are coming!\nThe word oligarch first came into wide use in and about Russia in the 1990s; back then\, it referred to men who had built their fortunes on the ruins of the Soviet economy and then used their wealth to obtain political power. In Putin’s mafia state\, oligarchs have surrendered their autonomy — and any political ambitions — in exchange for wealth. In Breakside Brewery’s craft beer state\, The Oligarch has surrendered its flavor to bourbon barrels for two years before being exiled to Peaks and Pints bottle shop\, taproom and restaurant in Tacoma’s Proctor District. \nPeaks and Pints will host the Tacoma release party for Breakside’s The Oligarch bourbon barrel-aged British imperial stout and its six variants 5-8 p.m. Thursday\, Feb. 28 — the last day of Peaks and Pints February Stout Month. \nThe Oligarch. The “original” beer is a single batch of British imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels for more than two years in the making. Next\, the Breakside brewers replaced their Russian fur brewer bibs for scientist lab coats adding a variety of ingredients to the base British imperial stout. \n“This is also the first time we’ve blended different-aged batches of the same wood-aged stout into a finished blend\, which gives The Oligarch incredible nuance\,” says Breakside Brewmaster Ben Edmunds in a media release. “When we took on this project\, we approached each blend seriously\, trying to create a whimsical\, balanced\, and delicious set of flavors. I hope that people enjoy drinking these beers as much as we enjoyed creating and blending them.” \nThe Oligarch project encompasses 84 casks\, resulting in 122 barrels of finished beer. Beers that will pour from Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log Thursday include: \nThe Oligarch: An imperial stout blended from four different batches of stouts aged in bourbon barrels\, this craft beer is rich\, sticky\, sweet and aggressive. \nMaple Oligarch: The maple bourbon barrels from Bissell Maple Farm in Jefferson\, Ohio provide a ton of complexity\, offering an especially nerdy delight to be found in this intense and rich beer. \nCandy Cap: This variant is made with one of the Pacific Northwest’s most beguiling foodstuffs: candy cap mushrooms. Their intense brown sugar smell helps create a sweet-then-savory sensation that dovetails perfectly into some of the strong oxidative notes of the casks. \nBocconotto: Aged on cinnamon bark\, toasted almonds\, chocolate and a touch of lemon zest\, this beer is an ode to one of Breakside’s favorite Italian pastries\, a specialty of southern Italy. \nChampurrado: Comprised of eight of the richest casks from the series and inspired by the flavors of Mexican champurrado\, Breakside aged this stout on a mix of cacao nibs\, vanilla bean\, and toasted corn. \nPiedmontese: The most elegant variant in this series\, this beer was fashioned on the off-sweet cakes of northern Italy. Breakside conditioned this blend of maple barrel-aged stouts on Oregon-grown hazelnuts and vanilla bean and added a touch of sea salt for depth. \nCoco Breakfast: Breakside grabbed inspiration from Edmunds’ favorite childhood breakfast cereal and loaded up the cocoa and vanilla for a beer that works for dessert — or breakfast. \nTHE OLIGARCHS ARE COMING! DESCRIPTION:The Occidental Beerist in Tacoma\nThe German Beer Purity Law — Reinheitsgebot — is three years past its quincentennial: 500 years of absolutely nothing but barley (or wheat)\, hops\, water and yeast. Not so much as a spruce tip or cacao nib may defile anything called “beer.” Occidental Brewing’s brewmaster Dan Engler mostly brews beers in the spirit (if not the letter) of the Reinheitsgebot. Opening in 2011 in Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood\, Occidental makes some of the best German-style beers in the Northwest\, including their authentic Bavarian Hefeweizen. It’s hefeweizen makes one want to throw on a pair of lederhosen over your flannel. If you like wheat beer — heck\, even if you hate it — you must try this sweet\, banana- and clove-scented hefeweizen pouring from Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log Wednesday\, Feb. 27 during Occidental Brewing’s Tacoma Launch Party. \nDid you choke on your Occidental Hefeweizen as you read that last sentence? Yes\, You have been enjoying Occidental craft beers for quite some time at Peaks and Pints\, but that’s because the brewery’s sales executive Chris Spinelli has been periodically driving his beer up to Tacoma. This month\, Occidental signed with NW Beverages\, which means Spinelli can cancel his Goodyear Tires of the Month membership.
