Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Octobermas On The Fly

Share

Check your calendars, friends. Yep, we’re in October, a month in which your only concern should be which trimming back the hop bines, monitoring your Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino weight gain, debating inappropriate COVID Halloween costumes ideas, and repairing your backyard things after yesterday’s storm. But under no circumstances should you spend any time thinking, “Will it snow this weekend?” And certainly, certainly do not ask yourself or anyone else, “Have I completed my Christmas shopping yet?” That said, even though Peaks and Pints is still drinking Mexican Vienna lagers and wearing shorts, Santa’s reindeers delivered Christmas beers this week(!). More than 100 Washington State Parks remain open year round First a caveat: Skinny-dipping is illegal in Washington State Parks. Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Effervescent

Share

When Robert Frost came upon his two paths, he chose the one less traveled. But what if he didn’t have to choose? What if he could take both paths simultaneously, thereby removing guesswork and consequence from his action? Peaks & Pints’ Monday Cider Flight is choosing both paths — sparkling cider. You’ve probably tasted a cider with lots of fizzy bubbles, and you may have even had a completely still cider. However, carbonation variation is more than just a question of its presence or absence. There are a few bubble types that have to do with fermentation and legal limits.

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Big Sky On The Fly

Big Sky Brewing has been leading the Montana craft beer scene since friends Bjorn Nabozney, Neal Leathers, and Brad Robinson launched it in 1995. Homebrewers Leathers and Robinson moved to Missoula in the summer of 1990, and met Nabozney at Sportsmen’s Surplus and High Country Sports employee lounge. The three felt Missoula could use an ale brewery to balance the city’s to lager-producing brewery, Bayern. It didn’t take long for Big Sky to find success, especially after the introduction of Moose Drool Brown Ale. Today, Big Sky Brewing beers are available in 24 western states. Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Porters On The Fly

Share

There’s nothing quite like a good porter; Peaks and Pints can recognize one almost by its aroma alone. These dark, often full-bodied beers have something of an attitude thanks to their caramel and chocolate tones. The origins of the style are traced to the 1700s, when it was a favorite beer of the porters who worked the shipyards in London. In the U.S., the porter style nearly vanished in the years following Prohibition, as light-bodied lagers appealed more to the masses. Homebrewers and small craft beer makers helped revive the style. Today, Peaks and Pints porters in a to-go beer

In the early ’90s, Dusty Trail converted the historic Engine House No. 9 bar into a brewpub at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Pine Street, officially becoming the first microbrewery in Tacoma. Dick Dickens grabbed the Engine House reins in 2002, bringing in head brewer Doug Tiede. Heads turned and medals were hung. In 2011, The X Group added the Engine House to their local restaurant empire, with Shane Johns and Donovan Stewart running the kettles and hanging even more medals, mostly for their sours and saisons. Last year, they separated the brewery from the restaurant and opened E9

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Oreo Imperials on The Fly

Consider the Oreo. In the 100 years since its invention, Oreo has become the representative cookie of modern American culture. Everyone loves Oreos. (Quiet down, contrarians. We said everyone loves Oreos.) Oreos are mixed into Dairy Queen Blizzards. They’re used to make chocolate-y delicious pie crusts. Weird Al Yankovic wrote a song about Oreos called The White Stuff. And, they make delicious imperial porters and stouts. It’s not like you didn’t know there were porters and stouts made to emulate Oreos. It’s a pretty obvious and common adjunct flavor profile, chocolate and vanilla. Smoosh ‘em together, and that’s basically an

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Tropical IPAs On the Fly

Polynesian culture washed onto America’s shores after World War II, when soldiers returned from the South Pacific armed with aloha shirts, Hawaiian music and a thirst for tropical beverages. We’re not sure who brewed the first tropical-inspired craft beer, but honing in on the tropics can be accomplished via a couple different techniques. First, many of the recently released hops have flavors and aromas ripped from a fruit bowl, including Citra (papaya, mango), Mosaic (berries), El Dorado (watermelon, pears), Galaxy (peach, melons), Hull Melon (honeydew) and Galaxy (pineapple). Dial up a recipe with these hops, used later in the brewing

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: California Doubles On The Fly

Today’s Peaks & Pints to-go beer flight originated out of California. It’s a flight of double IPAs brewed in California, because, well, California. The state could use a couple double IPAs after their wildfires — massive, drought-amplified, state-engulfing wildfires you breathed through your mask from Point Defiance Park last month. Since the beginning of the year, more than 8,200 California wildfires have scorched “well over 4 million acres” or 6,250 square miles, according to Cal Fire. And, that’s piled onto 835K COVID cases and 16,150 deaths. On a positive note, double IPAs were born in California. Vinnie Cilurzo — who

Peak and Pints Pilot Program: International Cider On The Fly

Apples were among some of the first crops grown in colonial America. Potted seedlings and bags of apple seeds were brought over on the Mayflower. The Bible-thumping Puritans were not teetotalers. Apple orchards in colonial America usually meant one thing: hard cider. Apples flourished in the fertile soil and friendly climate, and soon apples were a key part of most colonial farms and menus. A thirst for beer and the introduction of prohibition laws meant hard cider became an almost forgotten beverage, but it is currently undergoing a revival with small producers and large booze brands all getting in on

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Fresh Citra on the Fly

Hop Breeding Company of Yakima, Washington released Citra in 2007. It wasn’t until Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. dry-hopped its Torpedo IPA two years later that the hop turned heads. Citra Brand HBC 394, as its officially known, is comprised of Hallertau Mittelfrüh, US Tettnang, Brewer’s Gold and East Kent Golding with a fairly high alpha acid and total oil contents, plus a low percentage of co-humulone for bittering. Bittering is cool and all, but Citra’s organoleptic profile and chemical composition lend themselves overwhelmingly to aromatic and flavor additions of citrus and tropical fruits. Fresh Citra hops impart delicate flavors of

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Barrel Aged On The Fly

Share

Craft beer is best fresh. If you drink a fresh hop IPA the day it is bottled or canned, it will be at its peak. Never again will it taste so good. Day by day, by degrees, its lushness will fade. Beer, unlike vinegar and Pop Tarts, is not a fixed food product. So why then do brewers barrel-age beer? Because it’s porous, wood allows for very slow oxidation, which can make darker, malty beers more complex. Wood can also host microflora, bacteria that add the sourness to wild ales and lambics. The barrel’s former resident — the wine or
