6-Pack of Things To Do: Thursday October 22 2020 The temperature’s dropping, but the roster of activities both entertaining and educational around town isn’t. Today you can learn about Tacoma Prairie Line rail corridor, Korean poet Yun Dong-ju, and writing for senses; you can drink beer from an award-winning brewery, or head to the market. Enjoy today’s 6-Pack of Things To Do. VIRTUAL TOUR: Up until 2003, trains pounded the historic Prairie Line rail corridor from the Thea Foss Waterway to the Brewery District, passing rickety warehouses and dens of iniquity — before UW-Tacoma rang its school bell for its

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Three Creeks On The Fly

Share

Three Creeks Brewing landed us in trouble. We had left the 2014 version of the Bend Brewfest on our way to meet the family in Pacific City, Oregon when we saw the Sisters, Oregon brewery from the corner of our eye. The U.S. 20 Highway slowed going the through the small town — a good excuse to take a break. Three Creeks’ delicious Vaquero Imperial IPA broke us. We rolled into Pacific City three hours late. While we sobered up, we learned Wade Underwood and his partners founded Three Creeks in July 2008. Underwood brewed on a 10-barrel system in

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: National Apple Day On The Fly

Share

Happy National Apple Day! That’s right; Oct. 21 is National Apple Day. Apple pie. Applesauce. Apple crisp. National Apple Day celebrates the apple in all its various forms and reminds us that apples are shiny, tasty, and healthy. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” “Apple of my eye,” and “as American as apple pie” are all very common phrases in our language. Be it good health, familiarity or love, all are used to denote something we hold to be very important to our concept of culture in America. They also call attention to a humble fruit that not

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: West Coast Flanders On The Fly

Share

Originally from Belgium’s Flanders region, Flanders red, also known as the Burgundies of Belgium, won’t destroy your cheeks like other sour beers from the country. This beer is brewed using large amounts of Munich and caramel malts with traditional brewing methods. The beer is then aged in large wooden barrels, vats, and foeders, followed by inoculation with wild yeast and lactic acid-producing bacteria. The most important is the tradition of aging the red ales in huge vats of unlined oak. The wood, which cannot be sterilized, is home to dozens of wild yeast and bacterial strains that consume the residual

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Graf

Share

If beer and cider had a baby it would be a graf — both distinctly different from and greater than the sum of its parents. What’s in a graf? Sometimes spelled “graff,” this lesser-known drink brings together cider and beer, at least according to Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series where the apple-based beer of 7,ooo B.C. made its modern day debut. While the books provide little detail as to what exactly Graf is, it’s described as an apple-based beer-like beverage ranging in strength that’s regularly consumed by residents of Mid-World. Would a cider by any other name taste as

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: New Hazy IPAs On The Fly

Share

Hitting the scene in the early 2010s, the New England style India pale ale came to fame thanks to a Vermont brewery, The Alchemist, with their Heady Topper, an unfiltered double IPA that became a cult favorite. The beer was a success, and other New England breweries followed suit: namely Hill Farmstead Brewery, also in Vermont, along with Trillium Brewing Company and Tree House Brewing Co., both in Massachusetts. Call them hazy, New England or Northeast style; they’re still all the rage. Even the Brewers Association recognizes the category for its competitions. Though loaded with hops, these small-batch brews tone

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Mocha On the Fly

Share

If you drink enough mocha, you will come to realize that some are indisputably better than others. But, once you account for differences in quality, you have to admit, there’s a sort of sameness about them: espresso, bittersweet mocha sauce and steamed milk for a sweetly satisfying coffee. It almost makes you feel sorry for baristas. Why shouldn’t they get to experiment with flavors the way brewers do? Brewers incorporate coffee in their brew in several ways: mixing beans into the malt build, infusing during barrel aging or straight up cut the beer with cold press. With so many kinds

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Last Fresh Hoptober On The Fly

Share

October in Washington brings juicy plums, the smell of boiling Dungeness crab and pumpkin spice lattes. But for beer drinkers, October still means wet hop beers. One of the most seasonally specific styles that a brewery can make, wet-hop (or fresh-hop — there isn’t a difference) beers are brewed with just-harvested whole-cone hops rushed from farms to brew kettles to capture the most vibrant flavors and aromas of these pungent flowers before they begin to fade. This limits the brewing period to the very short hops harvest season every August and September, with the bounty arriving in early October, at

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Effervescent

When Robert Frost came upon his two paths, he chose the one less traveled. But what if he didn’t have to choose? What if he could take both paths simultaneously, thereby removing guesswork and consequence from his action? Peaks & Pints’ Monday Cider Flight is choosing both paths — sparkling cider. You’ve probably tasted a cider with lots of fizzy bubbles, and you may have even had a completely still cider. However, carbonation variation is more than just a question of its presence or absence. There are a few bubble types that have to do with fermentation and legal limits.

It didn’t take long for Big Sky to find success, especially after the introduction of Moose Drool Brown Ale. Today, Big Sky Brewing beers are available in 24 western states. Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Porters On The Fly

Share

There’s nothing quite like a good porter; Peaks and Pints can recognize one almost by its aroma alone. These dark, often full-bodied beers have something of an attitude thanks to their caramel and chocolate tones. The origins of the style are traced to the 1700s, when it was a favorite beer of the porters who worked the shipyards in London. In the U.S., the porter style nearly vanished in the years following Prohibition, as light-bodied lagers appealed more to the masses. Homebrewers and small craft beer makers helped revive the style. Today, Peaks and Pints porters in a to-go beer

In the early ’90s, Dusty Trail converted the historic Engine House No. 9 bar into a brewpub at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Pine Street, officially becoming the first microbrewery in Tacoma. Dick Dickens grabbed the Engine House reins in 2002, bringing in head brewer Doug Tiede. Heads turned and medals were hung. In 2011, The X Group added the Engine House to their local restaurant empire, with Shane Johns and Donovan Stewart running the kettles and hanging even more medals, mostly for their sours and saisons. Last year, they separated the brewery from the restaurant and opened E9
