Peaks & Pints hosts a wine night with Gilbert Cellars from the Yakima Valley Friday night. 6-Pack of Things To Do: Friday, Nov. 17-Tuesday, Nov. 21 2023 Try My Flugelhorn, Charlie Brown won’t screen this coming week but, of course, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving will, though, with the sad kids-can’t-cook meal of toast, popcorn, pretzels, and jellybeans. OK, we get the joke. But even this makes no sense. Toast, we get. Pretzels, fine. But what kid gets to make his own popcorn (especially in 1973)? And where in the hell does one find jellybeans in November?

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Coffee

Share

File Under: Things that get you buzzed. Like many folks, you might be a slave to chemical rituals. Caffeine in the morning, and booze at night. In the name of efficiency, Peaks & Pints recommends combining the two at every opportunity. The pairing of roasted barley with roasted coffee is so natural; it’s almost surprising these stouts and porters didn’t catch on sooner. But coffee beers didn’t really start to percolate until the mid-’90s. But almost no one argues with the inspiration — porters and stouts tend to rely on a roasty malt bill already, conjuring subtle coffee aromatics and

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Anchorage Brewing

Share

A brewer with an international reputation, Gabe Fletcher, the head honcho at Anchorage Brewing, started his career at Midnight Sun, another Alaskan brewing company. After 13 years of helping cultivate an image of creating adventurous beers, Fletcher decided to part ways with Midnight Sun and strike out on his own. In 2011, Fletcher released his first Anchorage beer. Turns out Fletcher’s meticulous attention to detail and brewing expertise combined to make some amazing beer — from fresh-brewed hazy IPAs to mixed culture fermented fruit beers to barrel-aged stouts and barlywines. The brewery took off, eventually moving to its own brick and

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Dark Beers

Share

What makes a dark beer dark? It all comes down to the malts. Though all beer relies on malts (cereal grains that have been allowed to germinate, then dried to halt the germination process), dark beers are unique in their use of black and dark malts. These grains are heavily roasted to achieve the characteristic color as well as the caramelized, toasty flavors we love. The blanket term “dark beer” encompasses everything from classic styles like schwarzbier (a dark German lager) to the relatively new and trendy black IPAs. The most familiar dark beers, however, are generally billed as either

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Pine Notes

Share

Pine trees are evergreen, coniferous resinous trees growing 10-260 feet tall, with most species reaching 50-150 feet tall. Pines are long-lived, some shooting their first roots well before Jesus, before Rome, before most forms of civilization whatsoever. And the extra oxygen? Yes, pines filter countless pounds of CO2 though all those sun-dappled branches to make us healthier, And happier. Because of pine trees. We mean, clearly. Sadly, many millions live nowhere near a good, healthy clump of pine trees, much less a deep, funky forest that, within minutes of entering, works some feral voodoo on your id and makes you realize, with

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Big Bad Baptist Variants

When Utah’s strict liquor and beer laws changed in 2008, entrepreneurs David Cole and Peter Erickson were able to pursue their longtime dream of opening Epic Brewing — a strong beer microbrewery in Salt Lake City, Utah, like those found in their home state of California. Having started an international aquaculture company in Utah in 1992, Cole and Erickson were no strangers to food and drink (and the art of making them well), so when they teamed up with acclaimed brewmaster and fellow beer geek Kevin Crompton, the trio immediately set to work brewing a carefully curated collection of strong

A handful of craft breweries sit close to said hops, including Single Hill Brewing. In August 2016, Ty Paxton and Zach Turner opened Single Hill in an old JC Penney Tire Center in downtown Yakima. Over many, many thousands of years, the preferred form of sweet evolved from honey to all kinds of confections, including craft beer. Fancy Pants Sunday: Fort George Dystopian Morning Light Portability, recycle-ability, light prevention, price point, shatterproof — there are many reasons why breweries are pouring their bourbon barrel-aged imperial stouts into 12-ounce cans instead of bottles. Sure, a bottle can be more presentable, but ultimately, it’s these reasons previously stated, and the juice inside, that count. Many beer enthusiasts don’t care about package size stating if the beer is delicious, they don’t care if it’s stored in a Hello Kitty Thermos. Fort George Brewery, with collaborative help from

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Dark Side of the Lager

Share

When most people think of lagers they think of pale, clear lagers with snow-white heads and a crisp, light flavor. But that wasn’t always the case. For centuries, dark lager dominated the scene in Central Europe until methods for kilning paler malts came along and the introduction of amber lagers such as Vienna lager and Märzen hit the scene. Eventually, in 1842, Joseph Groll brewed a beer in Plzen, Czech Republic that was golden with that thick snow-white foam. Pilsner was born and the world hasn’t looked back. Today, Peaks and Pints takes a step back into pre-pilsner history to

Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Fresh Hop Friday

Share

Fresh hops are brewed during a very brief window of the year when hops are being harvested. It’s the one time brewers can use hops directly after they’re picked from the vine and before they are processed in any way; normally hops are dried and then pelletized. During fresh hop season, the hop cones go straight from the vine to the beer in a matter of hours. The result is a wonderfully aromatic, fresh-tasting creation. But fresh hop beer isn’t easy being green. The brewhouse fermenter sits empty waiting for the phone call. It’s an eternity if there’s only three
