Peaks & Pints Pilot Program: Tasty Low ABV On The Fly

Share

What is a session beer? Well, it depends on whom you ask. The term’s precise origins and coinage are fuzzy. Beer experts can’t seem to agree on a specific year, for instance, but consistently point to British pub culture as its inspiration. Session beer is not defined by flavors or aromas, which can place it in almost any style category. It’s generally agreed upon, however, that any brew bearing the description should be low in alcohol but tasty enough to enjoy for a prolonged period of time, or “session.” The alcohol by volume, or ABV, issue is a bone of

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Women’s Day

Share

Every Monday, Peaks & Pints suggests a to-go flight of cider. On this International Women’s Day, Peaks & Pints suggests the to-go flight should be ciders made by women. After all, women were the ones making cider in the 17th century when they first settled in the Chesapeake. Colonists were skeptical of water quality so their main source of hydration was alcohol, most often in the forms of cider or small ale (a lower-alcohol beer). Cidermaking was considered a part of cooking, thus placing it firmly within the female domain. Women, or Ale Wives, were often imported as brides specifically

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Sierra Nevada and Pale Pals

Share

Pale ales originated in the UK in the late 1700s after reliable methods existed to produce pale barley malt, and that meant pale-colored beer. At first, the new pale malt was expensive, so the pale beers were limited to wealthier drinkers. But as pale malt became more affordable, pale-colored ales displaced dark ales in popularity, slowly overtaking porter and stout. Sierra Nevada “Americanized” the style in 1980 when they boosted the alcohol content of the low ABV English pales, and with more malt also came more hops — specifically Cascade hops. In addition, Sierra Nevada boosted the carbonation, which became

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Oreo Day on The Fly

Consider the Oreo. In the 100 years since its invention, Oreo has become the representative cookie of modern American culture. Everyone loves Oreos. (Quiet down, contrarians. We said everyone loves Oreos.) Oreos are mixed into Dairy Queen Blizzards. They’re used to make chocolate-y delicious pie crusts. Weird Al Yankovic wrote a song about Oreos called The White Stuff. And, they make delicious stouts. It’s not like you didn’t know there were stouts made to emulate Oreos. It’s a pretty obvious and common adjunct flavor profile, chocolate and vanilla. Smoosh ‘em together, and that’s basically an Oreo. Today is National Oreo

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Bitterness On The Fly

Share

The term India Pale Ale has evolved quite a bit over the past 25 years and has taken on a life of its own. Moving away from what was known over in Great Britain, IPA has typically meant a very hop forward, strong pale ale, taken further by the trend of the West Coast IPA. In the last 15 years or so, IPA and West Coast IPA signified the beer you were buying and drinking was hop forward in terms of bitterness, fruitiness and aroma.  The New England-style beers have great hop aroma, but when brewed as intended, have much

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Imperial Porter On the Fly

In the early 1700s, it was common for London pub patrons to ask for blends of the various available brews. Historical documents say the Brits called their mixed beer beverage “Three Threads” using a third of a pint each of ale, lager and a strong brew called “Twopenny.” Eventually, bartenders told the Three Threadheads to take a flying leap off the London Bridge. Around 1730, a brewer named Harwood came up with a solution. He re-created the flavor of Three Threads into a single craft beer called Entire before it reached the pub. This beer came to be loved by

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Fruity IPAs On The Fly

For many Tacomans, the West Coast IPA defined the style a decade ago with its raw piney spiciness and dry grapefruit assertiveness. Brewers tried to shove as many hops in a glass as possible. But expectations of hoppy beers have been changing. Folks at Peaks & Pints ask for juicy tropical fruity IPAs through their masks. They smile when they read Sabro, Galaxy, Citra, Denali and El Dorado on the menu boards as they know notes of orange, apricot and pineapple will pour into their pints. In 1902, Wenatchee dubbed itself the “Apple Capital of the World”. In 1970, Texan farmers Gene and Katie Handley plated Red Delicious and Golden Delicious in their new home of Wenatchee. Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Kolsch On the Fly

Peaks & Pints has been drinking a ton of stouts and double IPAs — after all, February is stout month at Peaks & Pints, and our upcoming Tournament of Beer is Northwest double IPAs this year. Today, we could use a clean, classic style. We could use a kolsch. Since the German pale ale didn’t just originate in Cologne, or Köln, it technically can only be made there — we should spell it “Kolsch” without the umlaut since, again, Kölsch is a Cologne appellation. Kolsch is made with ale yeast and is fermented warm, yet commonly aged at colder temperatures,

Today is National Banana Bread Day so let’s go bananas with a banana to-go beer flight! Yes, of course, hefeweizens have their say in this beer flight as the top-fermenting Bavarian yeast Torulaspora delbrueckii, which German brewers refers to as the “proper” hefeweizen yeast, produces phenols and esters that impart banana flavors. WLP300 yeast is also used in the production of traditional, authentic hefeweizen. It produces a high level of isoamyl acetate, giving the resulting beer notes of banana. We also threw in a stout, Belgian strong golden ale, winter warmer, and, duh, Banana Bread Beer. Let the peelings slip

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Hood River

Beginning approximately 15,000 years ago, ice dams on massive Lake Missoula in Montana began to break, sending torrents of deep water rushing through Idaho, Washington and Oregon. It’s a gorgeous area filled with waterfalls, hiking trails, outdoor recreation galore and craft breweries and ciders in a 40-mile stretch west to east — from Multnomah Falls to The Dalles, with Hood River somewhat in the middle. The ancient floods left Hood River with rich mineral soil. While Hood River’s
