Peaks & Pints hosts Tacoma Beer Week 2021 events People all over the greater Tacoma area will get to raise their glass to support local business and craft beer in a week-long celebration: Tacoma Beer Week is back. This year’s event will look different due to the ongoing COVID-19 precautions. There are still events going on. They’re just smaller scale. Everything that’s going on is smaller scale, not the packed rooms we used to see. Masks, social distancing, and outdoor seating is also encouraged. Peaks & Pints craft beer bar, bottle shop and restaurant has lined up four events this

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: IPA Day On the Fly

Share

There is something you should know about beer: There is a holiday for virtually everything about beer that is celebrated somewhere, somehow, including today’s IPA Day, which gives glory to hops, bittering units and IPAs. Founded in 2011, IPA Day is a global celebration of craft beer. It is a universal movement that was created to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers and brewers worldwide. IPA Day was originally developed as a social media-based holiday, but has since expanded into a worldwide party, boasting hundreds of IPA-themed events, celebrations and Peaks and Pints to-go beer flight. Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Fruity Sours On The Fly

One of beer’s most remarkable aspects is its versatility. On top of the fundamental ingredients of water, grain, yeast, and hops, a brewer can add almost any extra ingredients (unless you’re in Germany, where there are literal brewing laws about what you can put into beer). Ingredients found in beer today include chocolate, coffee, nuts, waffles, cookies, spices, cocoa, marshmallows, breakfast cereal, toffee, and, the focus of today’s Peaks & Pints to-go beer flight — fruit. When brewers add whole fruit, fresh-picked, never frozen, from a nearby farm or orchard to their beer, it’s magic. Yeast and souring bacteria actually

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Fort George On The Fly

Founded by brewers Jack Harris and Chris Nemlowill, the two combined their brewing expertise from previous Oregon coast gigs at Bill’s Tavern and Astoria Brewing Company to open Fort George Brewery in March 2007. Harris and Nemlowill drove their first 8.5-barrel brewhouse — nicknamed “Sweet Virginia” —from the East Coast and through a tornado to open a small pub in the Fort George Building on Duane Street in Astoria, Oregon. In 2009, they bought almost the entire city block, including the Lovell Building, where they installed a 20-barrel commercial brewhouse — “Little Miss Texas” — followed by a neighboring $12.5

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Tropical Summer

Share

You will not tough out this year’s South Sound summer all on your own. You just won’t. Or at least not without a cold, refreshing cider infused with 4,000 pounds of pitted tropical fruits. Good news: Peaks & Pints is loaded with magnificent core-cooling cider options: guava ciders, mango ciders, pineapple ciders, papaya ciders, passionfruit cider — although Peaks & Pints must admit, passionfruit tastes faintly of lip gloss, a blast back to the eighth grade. But as we munched the slightly sweet and sour flavor of passionfruit grew on us. Passionfruit is one of the three amigos in P.O.G.,

Celebrate National Peach Month at home with peach beer from peaks & Pints in Tacoma. Even if you’re not an Allman Brothers fan, this is the time to be eating peaches — out of hand, in cobblers and pies, over ice cream, in beers, while spinning 49-year-old records. National Peach Month begins today. Did you know that peaches originated in China, where they have been cultivated since the early days of Chinese culture?  The peach was brought to America by Spanish explorers in the 16th century and eventually made it to England and France sometime during the

Did you know today is National Raspberry Cake Day? No? You’re not alone. Every local baker we contacted was oblivious to the existence of this food holiday. But exist it does. After looking online, however, the origin of this day is still a mystery to us as well. Even with its dubious history and lack of prominence, National Raspberry Cake Day deserves at least a little attention. Did you know an individual raspberry is made up of about 100 drupelets? Did you know Raspberries contain vitamin B1, vitamin B3, folic acid, magnesium, copper and iron? Peaks and Pints doesn’t serve

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Equilibrium On The Fly

In 2016, MIT graduates and friends Peter Oates and Ricardo Petroni opened Equilibrium Brewery in Middletown, New York. The two professional scientists became obsessed with New England hazy IPAs burning a path to Hill Farmstead Brewery and The Alchemist. Finally purchasing a homebrewing kit, Oats and Petroni strived to create scientifically balanced beer, which they did before brewing their first double IPA, named EQM, in 2015. It didn’t hurt they were trained in water chemistry. Four years later, lines 300 deep stood before their door waiting for their latest release. Since then, they opened a second site in Middletown to

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Swift

Swift Cider, an urban craft cidery based in Portland, Oregon, is the reincarnation of Outcider, which was originally founded in spring 2012. Founding owner and head small-batch cidermaker Aidan Currie continued to dedicate his life to small batches made with fresh-pressed apples, local ingredients, slow-and-cold fermentation, and wild yeasts when he rebranded as Swift Cider in the Spring of 2014. Swift launched into the Oregon market with three flagship ciders: the Wholesome Apple, the Marionberry, and the Dank Hop. Currie takes pride in making balanced dry ciders, which contrast starkly with the sweeter styles in the market. According to the head

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: 2 Towns

In late 2010, Corvallis homebrewers Aaron Sarnoff-Wood and Lee Larsen filled a gap in the college town’s drinking scene — cider. The duo opened 2 Towns Ciderhouse crafting unique ciders brewed with the traditional English and French-style’s tannic apples, Oregon grown, of course. Named after the cities of Corvallis and Eugene (Larsen’s a Beaver; Sarnoff-Wood a Duck), 2 Towns believes “… that the long history of cidermaking demands respect and deserves to be done right,” states the cidery’s motto. “Starting with the highest quality whole ingredients from local farms, we take no shortcuts in crafting our ciders. Before diving into gueuze we must first consider the lambic. Lambic originated more than 500 years ago in the Senne River Valley, south and west of Brussels, Belgium. In traditional lambic brewing, the beer is boiled for an extraordinarily long time — usually at least three hours — and then the warm beer is pumped into a broad, shallow vessel called a koelship. Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Porter On The Fly

The porter style originated in England as the popular preference of the porters who worked in the shipyards. The style, an ale, is commonly dated to the mid-to-early 1700s. Porter is often confused with stout, which is also an ale, because of its similarly dark appearance. But porters actually can range from brown to deep black, a result of the chocolate or smoked brown malts that are used in brewing. Hints of roastedness can be found in some porters, but generally, hoppiness is moderate. In the U.S. the porter style nearly vanished when, after Prohibition, light-bodied lagers grew popular. Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Bellingham Hefeweizens On the Fly

Share

The hefeweizen has been around a long time. Some beer historians say it was brewed as far back as the 11th century. In German, hefeweizen (pronounced HEH-feh-vite-zen) means yeast wheat, so called because the beer is traditionally unfiltered, leaving the tiny particles of yeast sediment to turn the golden beer cloudy and turbid. It may be this suggestion of solidity that leads Germans to occasionally refer to hefeweizen as bottled bread. The beer style can have a variety of flavors including clove, vanilla, apple, banana, even bubblegum. They have low amounts of hoppiness. Hefeweizens are made with more than 50
