6-Pack of Things To Do: January 14-16 2022 The vast and impossible, beautiful and terrifying, liberating and wildly deity-drunk hallucination continues. 6-Pack of Things To Do: January 14-16 2022 offers a weekend of masked merriment. Cheers! BURPEES AND BREWS: Nothing builds community faster than a room full of people performing burpees and then laughing about it over beers afterward. Yes, indeed, exercise can be tough, and sometimes it takes a bit of extra effort to get off the couch and get moving. As it turns out, the best form of motivation often comes in the form of a beer at

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Reuben’s Brews On The Fly

Share

Englishman Adam Robbings’ beer recipes had much success at homebrew competitions, including winning the silver medal at the National Homebrewing Competition in 2012, and his talent, along with a Kickstarter campaign that raised close to $11,000, eventually earned him, and his wife Grace, their own brewery — Reuben’s Brews officially opened in Seattle’s Ballard district in August 2012, which they named after their son, Reuben. Since then, the team has accrued an astounding number of accolades, including more World Beer Cup medals than you have fingers and toes. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a to-go flight of Reuben’s beers —

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Super Mario Bros. On The Fly

Share

Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto’s character Mario has appeared in more video games than any other. While he first appeared wielding a hammer as “Jumpman” against his nemesis Donkey Kong, it was the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. that introduced his brother Luigi and cemented the pair as Italian American plumbers-slash-adventurers. But the mustachioed mascot’s defining moment came in 1985 with the release of Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Home Entertainment System, which teleported the brothers to the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Peach from the mischievous Bowser, King of the Koopa. Today, Mario and Luigi make the jump to

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Cocoa Nibs On The Fly

Share

The cocoa bean or simply cocoa, which is also called the cacao bean or cacao, is the dried and fully fermented seed of Theobroma cacao, from which cocoa solids and cocoa butter can be extracted. Chocolate is typically made from cacoa nibs, sugar, and cocoa butter, all of which must be (hopefully organically) processed before it becomes something you’d recognize and want to put into your mouth. Most cocoa beans originate in Peru, Belize, or Madagascar and then stored in a climate-controlled room where inferior beans are removed. The good ones are then slow roasted in a modified coffee roaster,

Gone are the times when a pie-inspired beer dropped jaws. And here, now, is a weird phase in the billion-armed evolution of craft beer, where ordering a stout made to taste like a candy bar or a fruited sour resembles a smoothie. We’re seeing an influx of sours brewed with fruit in many ways, from puree to infusion, with the goal re-creating a nostalgic flavor in beer form. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a to-go flight

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Vanilla Bean

Share

Consider the vanilla bean. The Aztecs did. In addition to inventing long words ending in “atl” and awesome mythology, they had the patience to figure out how to cultivate vanilla — a particularly difficult flavor to come by. The pods are the fruit of an orchid plant (Vanilla planifolia), and they must be cured and fermented over the course of about six months. If that weren’t involved enough, the high-maintenance orchid itself must be pollinated by hand. Mexico continues to be a major producer, but bourbon vanilla pods from Madagascar are the Chanel No. 5 of vanilla, valued for its

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Bird Beers On The Fly

Craft beer labels put all other alcohol labels to shame. From aliens to psychedelic landscapes, breweries and their designers dream up the most colorful labels in all the alcohol kingdom. Amidst the tattooesque cartoons of buxom women and questionable puns, Peaks and Pints noticed a theme repeatedly popping up on several craft beer labels: birds. It seems that craft beer aficionados love feathered (and not so feathered) creatures as much as wine lovers adore cats. Just which birds are featured on craft beer labels? Peaks and Pints is so glad you asked. Get out your National Audubon Field Guide and

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Ale Apothecary On the Fly

Founder Paul Arney and his team are focused on one thing at The Ale Apothecary — making truly unique beers, using strictly Oregon ingredients — including local barley, wheat, hops, barrels, and even the wild yeast drifting around the high desert air — aged in oak, waiting patiently for the right moment to express themselves. Ex-Deschutes brewer Arney bottle conditions his beer, allowing for natural carbonation and more complex flavors that are unlocked after further aging, and as a result, everything at their Bend, Oregon taproom is in bottles. And much of it is already spoken for through the brewery’s

Joel Gregory, homebrewer and electrical engineer, opened Ex Novo Brewing in July 2014 with the mission to contribute profits to its four primary nonprofit partners: Friends of the Children, IJM, Impact NW and MercyCorps. These are organizations that work mainly to build stronger communities for the poor by reducing violence, providing support, and, in the case of Friends of the Children, by working with kids to break the cycles that keep communities in poverty and violence. Gregory initially envisioned the Northwest Portland brewery as a small neighborhood pub and gathering spot. It wasn’t long before he realized Ex Novo beer

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Spiced Beer On The Fly

Jerry Seinfeld puts it perfectly in the Seinfeld episode “The Dinner Party.” He says, “People love cinnamon. It should be on tables at restaurants along with salt and pepper. Anytime anyone says, ‘Oh, this is so good. What’s in it?’ the answer invariably comes back: cinnamon. Cinnamon. Again, and again.” Spiced beers are commonly found during the winter holiday season. They are often made with cinnamon, plus nutmeg, clove, mint, figs and raisins, and other ingredients. These beers are hard to categorize because they take on the character of the add-ons. They come in both ales and lagers. Generally, spiced beers
